My son has a 2000 Chrysler LHS, recently he had to have the rack and pinion replaced. Not even a week later, power steering fluid began to leak terribly. We took it back to the shop and they informed us that the solenoid for the speed proportional steering was leaking. We were, also, informed that they had taken the solenoid from the old rack and pinion and used it because that part is not made anymore. If this is true and that part cannot be replaced, can it be bypassed so the car is drive-able?
You can use any rack from any LH car from 1998-2004 including any one without the speed proportional steering. Just leave the electrical connector disconnected.
Here's a seller on Ebay that has the exact replacement part for your 2000 LHS with the Speed Proportional vale on it. These are new genuine Chrysler steering racks and only $180. They're no longer available from the dealer and would've cost almost $1k when available. A couple of members on here have bought these including myself. I would buy one of these before any re manufactured aftermarket parts.
I don't know the answer to that but I think it's highly unlikely that a 2nd gen rack would fit in your 1st gen. Most likely the mount points are different along with other things.
