The hard stop I was talking about was when the pulley bottomed on the crankshaft diameter step, at which point of course the torque would quickly go up to your limit.

Hopefully you'll find that the pulley just needs to go a little further and that your threads are OK.

Well, here it is 4 months later, and it looks like the lesser torque combined with lots of LocTite Red is holding steady.

Not my favored solution, I must admit. Next time I have the HB off the car (hopefully no time soon) I'll consider cutting new threads for a larger bolt.

Meantime, as part of the earlier saga above, I belatedly did some googling and learned that the Web is filled with horror stories (for any type of car or truck you can think of) of stripped crankshaft threads due to not using the prescribed installer tool.

True, no one in my town sold or rented the size I needed, but if I'd been willing to wait a day or two, Napa could have ordered me one for about $50.

So, my advice about the best method to remove and install HB's? Get the right tools. No shortcuts.
