anybody coming from the midwest?

i REALLY REALLY wanna go, and ive been told by a lot of east coasters that i have to be there this year, BUT according to mapquest, from my front door to carlisle, PA is 780 miles and 12 hours and 15 minutes. it also has me going east on I-76 for 150 something miles and it says "portions toll".

dammit, its going to be expensive enough to drive that far with gas prices, but to pay on a toll highway is going to be worse....

pretty much, anyone wanna caravan? any chicago people down? im going to be on I-70 for 578 miles and then "Merge onto I-76 E via EXIT 58 toward BREEZEWOOD/NEW JERSEY (Portions toll). 152.8 miles" unless theres a better way through damn ohio/pennyslvania

if you really want to save a about 20 bucks, get yourself onto rt 80 coming across PA, then run route 81 south.

the 20 you spend in tolls will save you about 25 in gas, plus about 2 hours.

There is a southern route. I-64 through Louisiville, Frankfort and Charleston. I-79 to Morgantown. I-68 to its end at I-70 in Hancock. Then you can pop up to Breezewood on I-70 WEST (really goes north at that point) and take the toll PA turnpuke to Carlisle (65 miles) OR you can go East on I-70 to Hagerstown and up I-81 into Carlisle. The latter eliminates all PA turnpuke tolls.

Chicago folks would be unlikely to caravan with you unless they went (their) Southern routing which would be (your) Northern routing. (I-70)

I don't know exactly where you live but I seem to recall St. Louis area.

If so I show 12 hours to Carlisle by the Northern route. Splitting the southern route in half at Charlseton WV I get

St. Louis to Charleston 8 hours
Charleston to Carlisle 5 hours

Seems to add 1 hour.

ohhhh so taking 80 is going to cost me another 2 hours and 25 in gas??

and yes don, im right in STL. it takes me less than 15 minutes to get to I-70 in Illinois. I honestly do not think that it would take me a full 12 hours to get there. i averaged it out, and i know its stretching it, but doing 85 the whole way would be like 9.5 hours. Detroit to STL this past summer, took me like 6 hours driving in my sisters malibu, when mapquest said it would be like 8.5 hours.

pretty much though, if some people are willing to caravan, im totally down, even if i have to drive a few hours alone and then meet up. i dont really want to drive out of the way, ie meet somewhere right on I-70, maybe get lunch and keep going. please someone help out

Hummm...

Gorm Thinks he might be going to Carlise again this year...if his 2.7 feels like it. I would be willing to Caravan. I took the southern route last year...it was longer than I thought it was going to be. Taking that road I met I-70 somewhere in Indiana.

There really isn't a faster and more efficient way to get to Carlisle other than going on the PA turnpike. Plus I want to pull at Breezewood now and check out some abondoned sections of the tollway and maybe some abondoned tunnels

Of course Gorm also cruises around 75 MPH...so I don't know if that would work ;)

I live in Carbondale, IL near St Louis and I 57, 64. I plan on making a stop at Dayton OH and taking that route. I have driven to NY and PA couple of times through that route. There are couple of toll places. Its not that costly, may be $10 bucks, Its better for me to pay the toll rather taking longer routes and paying more money on gas. Anyway I will see you guys at Carlisle.

i learned not to trust times from mapquest and my sister (who lives in State College, PA) when i went to carlisle last year. Mapquest said 2 hours roughly, my sister said 3-4 because of Harrisburg, i did it in 1.5-2 hours (granted, i was bookin at 85-90mph average.)

of course my route takes me up to a toll, but only when entering PA, dunno how that works... BTW if that MS isn't on the fairgrounds on saturday, im joining Mav
