Basicly the upstreams are right in the exhuast manifold.

3.5L:


3.3L:



The downstream sensors (96-97 only) are the same on both engines. Right infront of the main cat. Its best to get to them from under the car.

Keep in mind that if you spray any kind of chemical on the new sensors, they will automatically be fouled...so don't try it.

How do u know when the one u need to replace is bad.. $$ is short.. don't have it to replace both.. I read somewhere when you touch it if it's cool/cold that that's the bad one.. I think the one on my right side manifold that's cool to touch while drivers side was warm.

If your check engine light is on (for bad oxygen sensor), and you have a 96 or newer intrepid, take it to autozone and they'll read your code for free, which will tell you if it is bank one or two, upstream or downstream. (Bank one is the same side as the number one cylinder, bank two is the side with cylinder two.)

Cyl #1, Cyl #2

Easiest way to know FOR ABSOLUTE SURE is to look at your coil pack. It has numbers on it for each cylinder. Find number 1 and track it to the number one cylinder (you could also track 3 and 5 to find out which side they are on, or track 2, 4, or 6 to see which side they are on - whichever is easier). 1, 3, and 5 are on the same side, 2, 4, 6 are on the other side. I'm not 100% sure about a 3.3 (it's probably the same - all mine are 3.5's), but on the 3.5's, cylinder 1 is on the left, cylinder 2 is on the right (if you stand at the nose of your car looking at the engine).

I just replaced the sensor on the driver's side. The old one had a lot of carbon on it as do the plugs on that side. Am I going to foul the new one up if I run seafoam through the system to get all the carbon out? If so, what's the best way to get rid of the carbon build up so I don't end up rebuilding the engine and replacing the sensor again in 3 months? Thanks.

Question Testing O2 Sensors

I think my O2 sensors are bad but I am not getting any codes. The Trep seems to be running very rich and gas mileage sucks. Is there an electrical test for these sensors so I don't have to shell out the $ for four new ones? I have already done the computer check and there are no codes.

As for the SeaFoam, the product literature states that it is O2 sensor safe.

this is probably a very popular/dumb question but (I couldn't find my answer by searchingthrough the many many posts about o2 sensors)...on my 94 there are 2 sensors, they are BOTH before the cat, correct?

Everytime I ask a parts store they ask me with before or after...and I always say after.

If not, is "after" the drivers or passanger side?

The reason I ask is because one was replaced a few months ago by my mechanic...after i told him to do both..now I'm chaning the other one. I just need to make sure I have the right one before i go putting the damn thing in.

Heh, just had to say goodbye to my first trep. A Deer wrote of my 95 3.3L
Just bought a 97 3.5L. Anyways, I need to know which O2 sensors are meant for each engine code for my 3.5L

In my case, the codes indicates 2 bad ones, Bank 1 Sensor 2, and Bank 2 Sensor 2

That indicates that both downstream ("after") are bad... The ones that are located just before the main Cat., but after the mini-Cats.

I am doing bank 2 (passenger side) sensor 1 and 2 (before and after the cat) and I am having trouble following the rear O2 sensor wires to the end so that I can disconnect it. I follow it back towards the firewall from above the car as far back as I can get and still cant feel the end/connecter piece. I doesn't look like it is something that you can easily get to ....even from a quick glance from underneath. Does anyone have any tips/tricks for this. 1997 Intrepid 3.3L ????
