Big3 I just replaced both of my front hub/bearing assy's for $80 each. It took me about 3 hrs total.

buschman I just replaced my own passenger side wheel bearing about a month ago. I beileve the part from NAPA was like $60-80. I needed to also buy a 34mm socket to get the wheel nut off. It was very straight forward. If you are mechanically inclind at all you can save yourself $600 by doing it yourself.

Also why are they replacing both wheel bearings? Are both bad? More than likely one is bad and making noise and they are replacing both because they are the same age(assuming). But just cause one goes bad doesn't mean the other is right around the corner. My passenger side made it 162K miles and my drivers side is still running strong. Bring along a passenger with good hearing and have them move from passenger side to drivers side to find out which is louder. The bearing works on either side so if you're lucky you'll get it on the first try.

DrDodge it really depends on what else was done,, was the bearing bad enough that it ate up the brakes?? aligment? etc?

Ruffy I had to replace my hub assemblies on my 300M because the wheel bearings were shot.
The right hub assembly also damaged the ABS Speed sensor($80 dollar sensor, but I got the dealership to replace that)

Normally the hub assemblies run $100-200 each. I bought them for $68 each off autozone.

Seems like different stores have them for different prices. the one store near my job had it for $68each. The one near my home had it for $127 each! It's obvious which ones I got.

Cost me about $160 total to get them put on.

Hailstorm He may be talking about tierod ends, if so you also have to add in a front end alignment. I would get a second mechainc to look at it and give a quote. It does seem a bit high.

98_2.7TREP Are you taking about the crankshaft bearings?

flying_pork_products I'm not sure... I think he said hubs... and some other thing. I'm very car dumb. But it's probably something that has to do with the bearing or interacts with it or is close to it or SOMETHING. I'm assuming someone that knows the mechanical concept of the intrepid would know.

I wish I wasn't so stupid... I kinda trusted this mechanic, he's been very fair every time I've been there. I didn't doubt the price. I was in a hurry and needed to fix it. That's what you get for rushing into things. Maybe I got jacked this time, real good.

Oh well...

$650 for replacement of bearings on a '01 ES?

Fair deal? Average price? Bit too high?

Both my front bearings were going, and the mechanic quoted me 650 for replacing the bearings and some other stuff that has to be replaced as well when you're doing that. The price includes labor.

Just curious if I got ripped off a lot, a little, or not at all.
