I have a 2000 4.7L 4X4 SLT+. Having 3 kids, the 3rd row seat comes in handy if any extra folks need a lift. I really like the 4.7L. It has a great sound and is easy to work on. We have about 40K miles on ours now and has been absolutely trouble free.

If you can, hold off for the '04 model's hitting your showroom soon. They will be a little bigger (if that's what you want) and will have the HEMI option :D . I plan on trading mine in for one!

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

One thing you have to consider when buying an SUV or a performance car for that matter, is how expensive those tires cost to replace......that and the lousy mileage....but hey, if you make the $$$, buy what ever makes you happy!

Good point. I cringe when I watch the overhead computer in the Durango when I have it in current or average miles per gallon mode. I get about 17 hwy if I take it easy (70 mph max). But going up long hills, it may drop down to 12 if I want to maintain my speed. Accelerating from a stop, the computer reads 4 mpg, though I've seen it as low as 2 mpg when i stomp the pedal to the floor from a stop.

my parents used to have a 2000 (i think) it had the 5.9 V8 in it. it was a good truck sounded awesome. the only problem was that damn third row. it may be good for smaller children but for me (6'4") you feel like your knees are up by your chest. but for towing stuff, it felt like you werent pulling anything

damn parents traded it in for a Grand Cherokee :p

Geez....kinda sounds like my "77 Lincoln with the 4 bbl 460....when i would put the pedal to the metal, you would actually see the gas needle jump down slightly........in my minds eye I imagined the carb sucking gas like a toilet flushing.......that beast cost me about $150 a month in gas.......cost $5 bucks to drive across town...lol....now that's lousy gas mileage!

We have a 99 SLT+ minus third row and rear air. It currently has 70K miles with some modifications. Handles great, mileage is ok for a 4500 truck. I get about 19 on the hwy and a tank sucking 12-14 in the city. The issues with Durangos are generally suspension realted (ball joints, control arm bushings). I've had the upper control arm bushings replaced on mine due to deterioration. They a just too close to the exhaust manifold on the passenger side engine compartment. Visit www.durangoclub.com for advise and other issues. Great forum, lots of help and nice people too.
