Hello,

I’m troubleshooting a no start with key condition on this car. The car will crank and start but then shut down within a few seconds. By my understanding this means a SKIM problem as my reading has indicated that this is the outcome when things aren’t seen as all good. The car also has what seems to be a professionally installed alarm/remote start system which is the only fob I have for the car. I can remote start the car with the remote and it will stay running even after inserting/turning the key and taking off but my understanding is also that SKIM is being bypassed somehow for this remote start to be possible, correct?

The theory I have right now is the only reason I can start the car at all is because of the alarm system bypass and that if I removed it I may be left with no means to start it period besides addressing whatever is busted with SKIM unless it’s the alarm interfering with its operation otherwise. I dunno, my brain is cooked on this one. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance

Hmmm. It could be that the system thinks it doesn’t recognize the signal coming from the chip on the key causing the car to turn off after a few seconds. It may be expensive but try and get your key reprogrammed to the system and see if that does anything if you can’t seem to find anything wrong with the system itself (no/loose ground, bad circuit boards, loose/no connections with plugs, etc)

could be running on the remote start relays when using it, and have a faulty asd relay or something else in the cars system.
there is an override key wired into the security of your vehicle somewhere to alow it to start with no key in the ignition.
your particular system might have skim run through it, so it only activates when used through it.
something seems to be going wrong with yourability to override the remote start for key use.

If it's an aftermarket system with a SKIM bypass...then the "ByPass" is probably an original SKIM key taped to the bottom of the SKIM antenna. Pull the plastic covers around the ignition switch and verify there isn't a key in there somewhere. If it was taped to the antenna and fell off out of range then it'll act like you're trying to start it with a non-SKIM key and trigger the anti-theft.

If by rare chance it does have an actual aftermarket SKIM bypass module that will need to be removed and the SKIM system put back to stock and repaired to working order. That means programming new SKIM keys and cutting them. Many locksmiths can do this cheaper than a dealer. Might need a new SKIM antenna module, etc.

I revisited this on a warm day here in Michigan and on a whim disconnected the 4 pin connection at this aftermarket security module. The remote doesn’t work anymore and the LED up in the dash is solid red but the car now starts and stays running using the key. I guess SKIM wasn’t broken after all?

Far as I can tell; this system seems professionally installed and worked great at one time I imagine; but what a nightmare when things stop playing nice with each other.
