Hi, I am new to the forums and i'm desperate for some expert advice. This seemed to look like the best site in Google... Sorry I kind of feel like i'm just using these forums to get a quick response and even if that is the case. It doesn't mean I'm not here to stay. I appreciate any advice and any responses I get to this post, I am in need of some help and hope somebody here can guide me in the right direction. With that being said, I am just going to copy my post I have on Yahoo answers as i'm not sure if random people on the net are better at knowing Intrepids than dodgeintrepid.net :) Good luck diagnosing my problem and thanks again for reading. (sorry so long).

have been noticing some problems with my car. First question is - How many o2 sensors does my car have? O'Reily's used their scan tool and checked my engine light. Shows I am having problems with my o2 sensor(s) and couldn't figure out which one it is. The shop where I had my transmission rebuilt says I have 4 o2 sensors, websites online show I only have 2...

Also would o2 sensors going bad be related to these problems -

Car stalls all the time when I step on gas, have to rev it up to high rpm before it decides to move.
Gas mileage is terrible, would expect better than 20mpg's highway.
Car almost feels like it's going to die when idling, rpm's drop real low then car rev's itself up, repeats process over and over.
Car is shaky sometimes (pretty much same as above problem)
When stepping on accelerate pedal the car doesn't want to go sometimes or have to slowly step on the gas pedal until I reach a point in where it doesn't do it.

Once the car is going it has no problems driving on the highway or once i'm past lets say 10mph.

Could all of these be related to just some o2 sensors being bad, or do I have something else going on with my car? A guy once told me it could me my "throttle positioning sensor"

The car has 120k miles on it, just had its spark plugs done, oil change, all fluids topped off, and a transmission rebuilt.

Additional Details
If o2 sensors can cause all of these problems, I have been told I should only buy the original o2 sensors that came with the car. Can anyone verify if this is true? I would like to buy some cheap ones at the websites I've been visiting for around 35 bucks each. Will a different o2 sensor than the original ones that came with the car affect performance?

I know it looks like the answers are right in front of me, but that's several trouble codes that kind of describe what could be the problem. Do these mean we can eliminate the TPS and pinpoint it to the o2 sensors? I'm also a little worried about P0300 with the cylinder misfire detected.

your car has 4 O2 sensors, 2 in the exhaust manifolds, and 2 behind the converters, from what im seeing,, you need to do both sensors in the manifolds, now a lot of things can make a sensor read bad,, such as air leaks, fuel pressure etc, but,, if you want to toss in a couple and see what happens,, go ahead,, ONLY USE OE SENSORS!!!! our cars HATE STUFF MADE BY BOSCH, especially plugs and o2 sensors, , I hope this puts a little light on things,, now im going to bed,,

What motor do you have?
I just have the V6 3.5L - I hope im answering this correctly lol...


Also would anybody be able to tell me why I would be having a misfire with code P0300? Could this be related to the o2 sensors?

So if im looking for o2 sensors online, do I just make sure it says OE in it under the brand name?

chances are you have a bad coil or bad coils boots i dont think they are removeable. also check the wiring to the coil packs you might have a loose or frayed wire that is grounding out

I think that your misfire is most likely being caused by the O2 sensors. If it were caused by individual coils not grounding out well then the problem would be isolated to certain cylinders. But with the O2 sensors sending bad signals back to the ECM, it would cause the computer to vary how much fuel is injected to each cylinder and each cylinder may not necessarily get the same amount of fuel.

As far as finding OE sensors, your pretty much stuck with going to a dealer or a dodge/chrysler wholesale website. I would suggest the latter as they tend to be cheaper, but it never hurts to get a price check.

I know that many people here on the forums go to rockauto.com for parts, but I'm not sure that they would carry OEM sensors.

The upstream O2 sensors (the ones before the catalytic converters) help the PCM determine how much fuel the engine should get. If they go bad, they can cause bad gas mileage and rough running engine. The downstream O2 sensors (after the catalytic converters) are only used to figure out whether or not the catalytic converters are doing their job.

If you replace the O2 sensors and the engine still doesn't run right, you could try something else like TPS. The codes and symptoms do suggest the O2 sensors are probably bad so that's what I'd try first.

I would have to agree with those that have posted that the Random Cylinder Misfires and the bad o2 sensors are related.

As everyone pointed out there are 4 sensors on your car. 2 up at the manifolds (one on each side:D), and 2 after the cats (also one on each side :D).

Holy ****, just wow... You guys truly are amazing. I can tell you all know what you're talking about and it seems this isn't your first time diagnosing somebody's car problems. First I will replace the o2 sensors up front to see if this fixes my problem(s).

I'm not exactly sure what this means as you don't think they're removable, but I don't like the sound of not being able to fix it if it's not removable. lol...


I really didn't expect the rapid responses all in a few short hours. I feel like I owe somebody some money for helping me out, i'm not saying the problem is fixed or solved, but I think you guys are narrowing it down very quickly.

Maybe when the issue is fixed I could make a donation toward the website and that would show some appreciation of your guys' support for helping out new members and regular users on a daily basis.

Thank you for the websites that will help me out tons. I honestly have only done a few things to a car, serpentine belt, brakes, alternator, radiator, battery... But nothing super mechanical related to the engine itself. This will be my first sensor replacement of any kind and i'm hoping a novice "mechanic" like me will be able to do it without screwing it up.

So from what i'm seeing, it looks as everyone is agreeing on replacing the o2 sensors. I am just going to order 2 front o2 sensors tomorrow if that's what everyone believes I should do. I have no way of testing or figuring out which bank is which for my engine, would this be the proper route to go? I know on the test codes it says something about bank 2 sensor 1 and bank 1 sensor 1. Are these both the ones up front before the catalytic converters? I know my gas mileage is ****.

I also wanted to point out, my sister owned this car before me and the transmission suddenly went bad and stopped going in reverse overnight. I'm not sure if it was due to her terrible driving or if it's related to anything were talking about, which I highly doubt. But my point is my parents before they gave the car to me in September, took the car to a Dodge dealership and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with the car "stalling". I have asked my parents what they did mechanically and they said the o2 sensors were replaced and a full tuneup. I can verify the tuneup was done as the spark plugs looked brand new, the oil was still clean and all new filters all around, new plugs as well.... I have no way to verify the sensors or if they don't remember correctly. To put it simple, is there ANYTHING that can cause brand new o2 sensors to go bad in under one year? ( I am not 100% sure if they o2 sensors were actually replaced, but I just want to make sure if I do buy sensors and install them, is there a way for them to quickly go bad that they link to?) - not sure if I worded that correctly.

If the sensors were replaced, and they inserted BOSCH Sensors, they will cause the car to go nuts and could do what you are describing. That also goes along with the spark plugs. Something about Chryslers and Bosch has never agreed with each other. I recommend either going with Champions or Denso or dealer items (Just as long as they are not BOSCH).

Both o2 sensors that you are talking about are before the cat on the manifold.

Is it an early 02 that still might have earlier parts i.e EGR-stalling and shitty running/poor gas mileage-AND takes forever to pop EGR CEL code. Look for cracked vacuum line, especially under air cleaner box.

Sorry, my mistake. It is a SE with a 2.7L and I will definitely check out the vacuum line.

That's awesome, I would definitely buy some parts from him if he was wanting to sell cheaper than new.

Well I believe everyone has helped and done everything that they can. I am going to purchase these o2 sensors and look into seeing how hard it is to install new ones. Will the NTK (NGK) o2 sensors fit exactly where my old ones are so I won't have any problems? I'm looking into purchasing these today.

New o2 sensors are now installed. Thanks everybody for the dedicated support, I do appreciate it.

2/4 engine codes have disappeared (the o2 sensor related ones)

The only ones remaining are the multiple misfire detected and vacuum leak codes.
What I find odd is the check engine light has been going off for a couple days, then the next day it will be back. I don't understand why this would happen. Maybe the vacuum leak only happens ever so often?

Would the vacuum leak affect the misfires detected as well?

Anyways, the main problem is gone, my car doesn't stall anymore when I accelerate and I can drive peacefully like a normal car without worrying to slam on the gas pedal to make the car move.

Now to install my car stereo... After the vacuum leak is fixed of course ;P
