AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/
-- After a 16-year hiatus from NASCAR
Winston Cup racing, Dodge returned to the
race track and the winner's circle in 2001
with Intrepid. After a 12-year hiatus from hot
pursuits, Dodge returns to patrolling the streets next year with its 2002
Dodge Intrepid police car package.
"Dodge is all about breaking the rules," said Jim Julow, Vice President,
Dodge Global Brand Center. "But if you're caught breaking the rules on
the road, don't be surprised if you get pulled over by a new 2002 Dodge
Intrepid police car."
Available to police departments only, the police vehicle package is
based on the powerful 2002 Dodge Intrepid R/T -- the Dodge brand's
modern-day muscle car interpretation -- which features a high-output
3.5-liter SOHC V-6 engine that delivers 242 horsepower at 6400 rpm
and 248 lb.-ft. of torque at 3950 rpm. In addition to a powerful engine,
the Dodge Intrepid police package features a high-performance
suspension, heavy-duty four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, purpose-built
lighting, and severe-duty powertrain cooling system.
"Similar to racing, Dodge has a proud police car heritage," said Julow.
"After conducting extensive one-on-one research with police officers
throughout the country, Dodge created a police vehicle that specifically
answers their call for ride, handling, performance, space and comfort."
The former Chrysler Corporation dominated the police car business
throughout the 1960s, 70s and early 80s with market shares ranging
from 45-60 percent. Police vehicles manufactured by Chrysler Corp.
included the Dodge Royal Monaco, Dodge Coronet, Dodge Aires, Dodge
Diplomat, Dodge Dart, Dodge St. Regis, Plymouth Gran Fury, Plymouth
Volare, Plymouth Reliant, and Chrysler Newport.
Chrysler-manufactured police cars were also popular in Hollywood. The
television show Car 54 featured a Desoto police car, Adam 12 featured
the Plymouth Satellite and AMC Matador police vehicles while the Blues
Brothers movie featured Dodge Monaco police vehicles.
Production for the 2002 Dodge Intrepid police vehicle begins in January,
2002 at the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant, where the Dodge
Intrepid, Chrysler 300M and Chrysler Concorde are built. Base price for
the Dodge Intrepid police vehicle, which is available only to county, city
and state police departments is $23,800 (including destination).
