The car:

2004 Chrysler 300m "Special" edition. Limited production model, at least for a north aerican manufacturer. Only built 3 years (02-04). Production thought to be 8500 is units per year, with only 500 imported (imported. strange word to use as all LH models, 300m, concorde, LHS, an Intrepid, were bult in ontario) to Canada each year. So only 1500 max in Canada, and actual numbers are thought to be lower in 04 due to the model line ending that year. Arguably, the "big dog" of Chrysler's LH model line (now discontinued). Chysler intended this model to compete with the BMW 7 series and Lexus's, but it fell a little short being "shackled" with a front drive platform, a little too stiff suspension and just a shade too little HP. It ended up more around the BMW 3 series level. Very nice and satisfying to drive car overall though. The press loved it, but all agreed it was marketed wrong. Even nicer when you consider I just bought one a few months ago with low mileage for 12,000 CAD (listed for around 45,000 new in '04).
Canadian review for an '04 Special from a Vancouver journalist (although I think the actual car is an '03 due to the interior two tone color):http://www.canadiandriver.com/testdrives/04300m.htm

Snapped a couple quick pics today:

Exterior:

(this is all how it comes form the factory by-the-by)

Metallic Silver
Factory side skirting
255 hp 3.5 V6
"Autostick" 4 speed automatic
18" rims with michelin "pilot" sport tires.
1/2 in lower than standard 300m
300m special brake package
Sport tuned suspension (improved shock valving, high rate springs, Larger sway bars front and rear, etc)
Specific PCM programming
Lower gearing
Dual exhaust
HID's
And on and on............

Interior :

(again, all factory stuff)

"Dark slate" leather everywhere
Faux carbon fibre dash and door inserts. Looks OK, I may make some real CF ones to replace them. I'm not much for "poser" stuff.
Heated 8 way power seats
factory sat nav (RB1, this is on it's way out soon for the 'puter)
EVIC with tire pressure monitoring
Air, cruise, tilt, pw, pdl, pt, etc
Automatic temperature control
Electroluminescent guages
Autodim mirrors, inside and out. Outside heated
ABS, traction control

Etc, etc (pretty loaded overall).

The 'puter

Dell optiplex gx270.

I know, I know: Eeww......a desktop! (slim model though).

But it's been working great and rock solid stable as a carputer for two years in a previous vehicle so I see no need to change a proven setup in the pusuit to just get "smaller". everything runs great with no issues whatsoever, so she's 'a-stayin put!
My last car was an Intrepid (my fondly remembered stone white 2000) and the 'puter will slip right up under the package tray in the trunk and be completely "out of sight". And I don't have any of the "swelling caps" problems that gx270's seemed to have been plagued with. Besides, as we all know, I've got more than enough room to spare ;)

As we all know, the trunk's easily a 3 bagger! *insert "sopranos" theme music here*

Carrying on:

P4 2.26ghz
256 Ram (quick reboot)
old mx 440 based Nvidia card for 800X480
Audigy 4 sound card. I may go with something a littel better soon. I've been eye-ing Red's "user changable" op amp card for a while now...............
Wifi card (cheap ebay buy, can't remember make)
slot load DVD "in dash"
Custom case (fabbed in metal, it's my thing)
320 gig 7400 drive. Yeah, pretty big. Ordinarily I'd say overkill, but I keep movies on it.

Lilliput EBY 701 (again, working great for a couple years now. No need to change something that works!)

Power: the "mac-daddy" of power supplies- DSATX and a brainstem. Love it! I highly recommend it to anyone considering it.

I'm an overkill kind of guy in some areas. I figure if I go big or go home! The PS will be "understressed" and live a long, stable, productive life.

And yes, the gx270 is a standard ATX 20 pin connector and it will take an ATX PS just fine. It's not Dell proprietary. Took me a while to find this out, hopefully I can save someone the headache by posting this here. I also figured out how to do away with the optiplex's two "sub-front control panels" (weird. Oh well, Dell) by tracing the circuit paths back to the motherboard. There's also a thread on this forum about it and I can confirm the info is correct. Do a search and you'll find it. I keep the second sub panel 'cause it allowe dme to have two extra open USB ports. But you can remove this also if you wish. DSATX now powers the system up and down just fine thank-you-very-much.

Software

Road Runner. 'Nuff said.

Xp pro.

Skin- LSX Void. I was going to alter the psd's in void, but I'm waiting for 3.0 to see how it goes. It's supposed to have user definable colors..................we'll see how it goes.............<rubbing hands together impatiently>

system boots from cold to music playing in 50 seconds by my stopwatch. Pretty good, I may fool with hibernate to see if I can cut that down anymore without loosing stability. The few times I've tried hibernate, I've run into all kind of USB issues. Not worth the hassle or headaches IMO, but I may fool around with it some more. Any suggestions welcome here.
That damn Dell screen during POST ticks me off though. I've thought about doing a bios update with an altered image, but hte thought of a "fried" board bios has kind of kept me away. Maybe I'll pic up a spare motherboard and give it a try..................gx270 MB's can be had pretty cheap these days.............

If you want to know the actual Production numbers, send an email to chrysler. They will tell you!

I asked about 01' LHS's and was told something over 10,000 in 2001. I posted the original email someplace on this site..

Otherwise, very nice car! Looks very clean :)

BJ, those pictures are awesome!
Thanks, but really, they're just kind of ok. I was kind of limited as to how far away I can go due to the surgery (the shots were taken about a 10 min drive away from home). I also didn't spend alot of time positioning for the proper composition (got a littel "uncomfortable" after a bit) and ended up rushing it.
There's alot better places to snap pics around here, once I get the weather and time (I'll probably have the wife take the pics, she's a photographer) I'll get some pics worthy of "poster size" for the garage. I'll be using the raw image format on the wifes d2xs so I'll get enough data for a good sized poster. Besides, the things I have to adjust in PS to look right, she gets right on the first snap without any PS "magic" at the end........just makes for better overall images.............

Now that it's fall, I've got a certain "corner in the road" in mind for a pic. It's a sharp righthander country road, the trees are hanging in a multicolored canopy over the turn, there's a "sharp turn ahead" sign right on the corner and a country bridge in the background. Once the wife gets time, I'm plannig to position the car across the road and snap a pic or two. I have to wait for her though. The last thing I want is to park the car across both lanes on a blind corner and leave it unattended to take pics! Wouldn't want the car t-boned for a stupid picture............

Yup, been "accused" of that before...............

Probably why I'm "Standards" and in charge of enforcing that at work........

Make "the cut", or I'm sending you packing man!

Failure is not an option in my line of work................sounds cliche, but it's true............

Audio:

*comming soon*
What the heck? The edit buitton is gone on the previous posts in my thread!?!?!?

Oh well:

audio update

Ran the power wire today. 4 Guage to the trunk. Even better job than I did on ol' white if I do say so myself. It took all day, but when you have a couple hundred stiches holding your ab muscles together, that's pretty good progress if you think about it.

The fuse (under 6 inches to the battery) is visable, but only if you know where to look (hidden), the 4 guage is indistinguishable in the engine bay and you don't see it again until it pops out in the trunk. Runs down the factory loom, through the passenger door pillar grommet and under the carpet to the trunk.

Very pleased so far.

Total steath install is underway............
