Wow, its been cold lately. Last 3 Days have been under -20, one was -29 and thats not including wind chill. The good old trep, still with the original 9 year old battery (late run 97 intrepid) started right up every morning, despite not being plugged in or garaged. It did groan like and old man, and there were a few squicks as it started rolling, and when I turned the wheel but I'm happy. I wonder how cold it has to get to stop her.

Anyone else feeling the deep freeze, how cold has your old trep been and still come to life. No fair using a block heater or counting wind chill.

I am in chicago and we are cold but not as cold as you. My trep starts fine in the morning. Just the same noises that are normal when cold outside. I also have the origional battery since 2000. Where do you live around? Canada?

Eeewww... -29? Thats damn cold!! If that kind of weather ever comes my way I hope I dont have to drive in it...

i agree with 32intrepid. i would call in sick to work. there is no way i would even try to start the car that cold. You could probably crack something in engine. i wouldnt take that chance

I had to get jumped the other day at -22. I tried the remote start from my hotel room here in Montreal and it didn't start, this is known to flood it so I was pretty well porked when I got to the car. The only other time I had trouble was two years ago at -28 and made the same mistake of trying to remote start, flooded and took her time clearing but started. I think the plugs are due any way (been 50,000miles).

I think the coldest was -11C, my EVIC was reading -11C so im going by that. My hands nearly froze to the steering wheel but the trep started up and it was slow turning over. I let it warm up for quite a bit before i left.

BTW is that -29F or Celsius? IF its F thats pretty good for that trep. My old little ford hardy turns over with a new batter in -7C HAHAH.

it was -33 F here a couple weeks ago, my car started right up but it has a pretty hardcore deep cycle battery

Never had to try a 'Trep at that temp. Once had to start my '76 Aspen at -24. Sure didn't want to go, but it did. Sounded like the pistons were swapping holes for a few minutes.

i think i've started the trep at like 0F thats the lowest, she made a grunt and started right up. She dont even make a grunt she just makes one tick and is done. :( I'm a victom of a dead battery..

I wouldn't worry about cracking the engine LOL, millions of starts occur each year at temps that cold or colder....In Canada and Siberia that is LOL.

Seriously though, no one around here thinks twice about it, just another winter day....and once in a while it gets even colder. I'm sure with wind chill -60C isn't unheard of and although cars don't feel wind chill drivers who have to scrape their windshields clear do, my philosophy is: If I can stand to go try to start the car and clear it, it had damn well better start.

Although I could forgive a cheap 9 year old battery if it ever failed now, I'm surprised its lasted this long.

I don't have room to work on my car at my apartment so I get my oil changes at the dealership. They just put in 5W-30 in winter and 10W-30 in summer, seems to work just fine.
