Hi guys,

I just dropped off my RT for 30k mile service. Dodge recommends serpentine belt tightening and a fuel system cleaning in addition to the normal oil change, air filter replacement, and tire rotation.

When I got the dealership, they informed me that the fuel system cleaning would be $90 and the belt tightening would be $150!!!
I gasped in disbelief. THey told me that the Intrepid has 2 belts and that they would have to remove part of the radiator to get at it, thats why it was so much.

I politely declined these two services.

Do these prices seem reasonable? Are the services absolutely necessary for a 2001 that only has 30k miles?

THANKS!

I had the belts changed on my Intrepid recently... at 63K miles. I did this because they'd squeak a little when cold.

Yeah, the Intrepid does have two belts and it probably is a major pain to get at them for replacement or tightening, etc.

As for whether you need those services at your mileage, I'd say "probably not".

If you put on mostly highway miles (as I do), your service needs are going to be less... overall.

30K service:
Check and replace PCV valve (if necessary)
Drain & replace engine coolant
Brake Fluid change
Change tranny fluid and filter
Replace air filter

$80 is what the dealer charged me a while back ago for a fuel system cleaning. As far as the belts go, I honestly don't know. Seems high IMO.

The tranny service would be the one i would do for sure. They do not have to remove the radiator. Just the upper support pc. About a 5 min job with power tools.

The belt adjustment is not needed until later down the road. Fuel cleaning isn't needed either. Just go down to your local auto parts store and pick up a bottle of STP complete fuel system cleaner. In addition to that, run STP injector cleaner at each oil change and you should be styling!!!

If you are reffering to the two alt. belts that need tightening... Spook is right... u can take them off, tighten, do whatever to them by just taking off the top metal piece that goes across the front of the car.

It turns out that the $150 was to REPLACE the belt, not tighten.
I wish they would've informed me of that little detail.

I took intreper's advice and got a bottle of complete fuel system cleaner.

Next time, I'll be such to explicitly ask them how much it will be to just tighten the belt, not replace it.

Yeah, you can get a good replacement belt for $20, and a regular mechanic can change it for $60, assuming you needed it...which you don't. I agree with the gas cleaner every oil change. Maybe at very high mileage you would need the dealer to do the treatment.
