Well i went from the all shitty sbc dsl 2.5 dl to comcast 8meg dl and well yeah big difference alot faster glad i did it tho i dont know how long i can put up with comcast seeing how the installer was a full of ****.
If you are using windows 2000/XP, you do not need the comcast installer. I don't even know what they put on those anymore, the last time I used it was when they were still At&t @Home Cable Internet. I think it just has a browser, email, and their content and news? If you don't want that stuff just uninstall their software, the internet will still work.
Did you choose the upgraded speed tier? Here in pittsburgh the 8Mbps/768Kbps tier is an extra $10/month over the 6Mbps/384Kbps basic connection. Comcast has been known to upgrade the connection speed towards the end of each summer. Last year it went from 4Mbps/256Kbps to the 6/384. This summer the rumor is that the higher speed tier will jump to 16/1  to compete with FiOs. The 16/1 is already deployed to a few test markets around the US.
yeah i set those things up all the time, dont think i ever used the installer cd. i personally hate comcast and got rid of them asap, now i have sbc's dsl. the 6 meg package though, could not be happier and i am being 100% honest when i say my downloads with that are just as fast as comcasts 8 meg line, i tested it many times, just cheaper and much more reliable IMO, i dont know about your areas
LOL the installer only installed the line outside and into the room i dont let peeps touch the puter something always gets messed up when some one other then me plays with it. he was pissed about the neighbor not being home to open the locked gate which is every gate in chicago so he had to climb the gate. he comes in a say your neighbor came home and told me i was treaspassing and that nexted time she would call the police. I LAUGHED at that for 2 reason a what i do for work and B because she can speak any english. <little OLDDDDDD asain lady>
Xim im sorry for you having sbc Tho i know alittle more then i should since i have family that works for them sadess company around imo
dude i used comcast before, i had the 6 meg line, i got pissed off with them so i decided to switch, i have not had one complaint with SBC at all, and still i dislike comcast, at least in my area, and i am pretty sure that i have used it more and in many more different places than you have, a lot of people love it, but i have only used the 6 med sbc dsl one other time than mine, it seems like no one knows about it enough, think it is limited to 1.5 or 3 meg. i can guarantee that my download speed will be in the 680 - 780 kbps average range every single time, comcast it was all over the place, from 160 kbps - 800 kbps, but averaged around the 500 - 630 range, i test the speed every time i set one up, and those are my results, and then there is downtime that i had, times where i could not get online at all, that is just annoying, so i just tested out sbc dsl and kept comcast so i had both services for about 2 months, sbc did not let me down at all so i dropped that cable mess, never was sorry yet, i have no idea how it is in chicago, but i prefer dsl in detroit area
well i'm glad you're happy with dsl, but i'd still rather have cable... on short burst downloads I get about 1300KB/sec... steady downloads around 1020-1050KB/sec... with an upload speed of 87-92KB/sec... I can attest to those results at 2 different places I've lived, and my EX-girlfriends apartment, all of which are at least 8 miles from each other
I'd still drop it in a heartbeat though if FiOs was available in my area... People consider the school district, the neighborhood, etc. when shopping for a new place to live... my number one feature I'm looking for is, "Can I get FiOs here?" Lease is up in March, time to pack it up and head west where the good throughput is
i know what the throughput is, and i am paying for 6 meg line so its what i expect, i just expect more from an 8 meg line, the thing is, i live walking distance from the sbc hub so i know that helps me out a lot, and i am not saying the comcast is ****, i dont like it, and i am about the only one on earth that doesnt it seems, its just my preference, and sbc is supposed to get the fios in sept - oct time frame, but we will see how that goes, i am not gonna lie and say that i di dnot take that into account either when i switched, in any case, both are better than dial up and that 2.5 dsl stuff, and burst speeds i have had over 1 meg downloading as well with dsl, granted i know the burst speed lasts longer with cable, even on the 6 meg cable line
