can i use the '93 ES 3.5l engine in '96 3.5l Intrepid? i realize that the timing belt and water pumps are different and stuff. are the transmissions the same too? is there a way to tell by the numbers on the transmissions? thanks J

Everything is the same, except for what you have already mentioned.

Also, starting in 1995/6 the 3.5L had slightly lower compression to aid in fuel economy, but that won't pose a problem in a direct swap, you'll just have to be sure to use the reccomended 89 octane feul.

The harness and PCM pinout may have changed too from OBDI to OBDII. Wouldn't hurt to grab the PCM and harness too just to be safe.

edit: found a link to a thread that may help: http://www.dodgeintrepid.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13004 maydog said "a 94 engine will work with a 96 computer as long as the harnesses are swapped"

May want to read through the thread for more details. Sounds like he did something similar to the swap you're lookin at.
