Just a simple thread for the work on the TSi I acquired for $400 bucks day before Christmas. I was actually out surfing junkyards when I found it. Original asking price was $700 until I picked the car apart out loudly. I think once I pulled the engine codes he knew I wasn't bluffing on knowing it.

A/c works but may be little low on charge. I am surprised there. Was told water pump leaked. It did. All of it. Drove it 10 miles back to house watching temp gauge. Engine was smooth, but I kept I slow. I was surprised at the fact I made it with the water pump as loose as it was.

Overall you can tell the first, or at least first owners took care of the car and only the last one was the start of the downfall. Still feels like a good car just needs little love. Not a replacement for my Original Eagle. But just a chance at keeping another one from being scrapped so soon.

- Timing Belt Set (Done)

- Left Rear Tail lamp (Done!)
- Front Right Corner light housing (Done!)
- Pretty sure Cradle bushings
- Struts (pretty sure they have 214K miles on them)

Timing Belt, Water pump, Hydraulic Ten. and Idler repairs complete. Need new thermostat housing (bleeder valve stuck) Engine runs good seems to have power.

Slapped cheap cheapest pads on front (they were metal to metal) for now.


Cradle bushings will be ordered here next week. Once they come in and I get inner bushings taken care of I may go ahead and put the car on the road legally. Drive it bout a week or so see how she does rather it will be worth the extra money for some other minor fixes. However fuel filter and plugs/wires will be done though along with a upper intake cleaned seeing I gotta take it off to fix the damn tie rod bushings.

Don't matter much now, but I like to get the belt over the sprockets, stick a rag/paper towel between the belt and timing housing on the drivers side cam, use a 18mm wrench to move the passenger side cam so that the belt falls in place and then take out the slack there and put another rag in to hold the belt in place on that cam, then get the belt over the crank sprocket in the same manner and install the tensioner.

On the second try I did that with the second cam actually.

RKE purchased and programmed. Apparently in 96-97 you start the programming via the DLC connector vs the Trac Control switch in the 93-95.

PolyBushings Cradle mounts ordered.

Poly Cradle Bushings Installed.

New Inner Tie rods bushings installed.

Front Toe adjusters un frozen and anti-seized

New NGK Plugs (old ones were Autolites!) Installed

New Plug Wires (Champion)



Needs swap bar links
Egr Transducer

And figure out why There is no TCC engagement.

Poly Bushings Installed. Had to weld the Bolt Nuts on the front ones to get bolts out.

Found it needs Ten. Rod Bushings and control arms. (Basically cradle bushings went bad and they let everything else get bad because of it) Will need Rack bushings later on.

Passed Emissions been driving it. TC still does not lockup. Found lots O Glitter in pan. TC clutch prolly gone. Still shifts halfway decent. Will find another trans.

Finally Cleaned it, Did quick sweep on engine bay. Quick shine on rims.

Replaced Radio. Impressed with Stock Infinity System. Will keep it stock.

Pulled the Vortex thingy ma jig out of the intake and open the air intake box a bit. Shes roars bit more now.

Pretty sure Valve Cover gaskets are seeping. Need to replace the Water outlet with replacement. Will Paint VC when I do gaskets (If ever) and plan on sandblasting intake and either painting it or maybe try and shining it up.

is that a chrome shifter from an 300M? and how did you get the chromed shifter to fit and work on your TSI?
