Hi everyone! New to your group, go easy on this rookie! Just purchased a 2004 300M Special last Friday night at a used car lot about 75 miles from home. Got lost on the way, got there just before closing, 5pm, in the dark of an early winter here in Minnesota.
I know, rule,#1- Don't buy a car at night, especially a dark car (this one is dark blue).You can not see anything! Anyway, after washing and waxing it, the body is in great shape. I used to do bodywork and paint cars, I can see the tell-tale clues to look for (it has112,000m)
From the pictures, and that cold night I didn't catch the wheels/tires combo, till I got her tucked away at home. They are 225/60/16!. The sticker inside the drivers door says "Recommended tire size - 245/45R18 96Y".The car has some nice alloys on it, look just exactly like this

Opps,looks like I can't post that yet. They are(look like anyway) BMW alloys.


Some time in her past must have an accident that damaged a wheel, and that owner didn't want to shell out for the 18".Oh well..

I don't have extra cash right now to do anything now, buying a car, Christmas and all, and that nasty timing belt replacement cost I should do before anything....
What does my size I have now, do to performance, speedo, if factory set to 18"er's?
Have checked E-Bay already, both 17/18" are available for around $500.00 for 4..Not really a big deal in price between the two if I take time, and look around.Add the big rubber, and it's easy up to a cool grand.
What do you guys recommend? I'm an old geezer, Really don't need to feel if I run over a dime. I would like to go stock, 17" would be a softer ride, wouldn't it? Biggest wheels I ever rode on have been 16".
Sorry for the long post. Just so many questions,and like most everyone, not enough cash!

OEM wheels are 18" for the Special; if you have 16" rims then unfortunately someone swapped them out. 'Tis a shame.

225/60/16 is OE for 16" wheels on our LH cars. Your speedo will read just fine - there's a fractional difference between 225/06/16 and 245/45/18 in overall diameter. Nothing to worry about in that aspect.

If you like the wheel/tire combo that's on there now, run 'em! It'll look a bit better with 17's on there, and of course, if you come across a deal on 18's, they'll fit just fine.

that's the stock size for 16".
performance, etc would be just about the same. the taller sidewalls of the 16's should make for a nicer ride.
i have the stock 225/55/17's on my lhs for summer, and 215/65/16's on first gen painted alloys for my winter tires. ride is a little softer on 16's.
if not worried about the big rim look, stay with what you have.

The later 2003-2004 Special also rolled on 17" Chrome twin-sixes as an option. Apparently people weren't happy with the ride of the 18" wheels.That wheel is shown below on my old R/T.

Thanks for the reply's! I do have a question, Any idea why I get a low air pressure warning for one of the wheels from the electronic Information center? None of the wheels have an factory air pressure sensor in the aftermarket wheels it's equipped with now. How do I delete that warning? Why not a warning for all 4 tires, if all are switched out? Unless the sensors are not in the wheels, not sure how they work.

Actually in '03 and '04 the Special came standard with the 17" chrome twin sixes and the painted 18s were an option due to the many complaints of "ruff ride" they received.

Might have one in the spare still??


Only way to get rid of the warning is to swap in an EVIC without TPMS or add the sensors back in (about $30 each)

Thanks guys. I was wondering about resetting the TPMS. I have read some different answers on the 'net. Any one sound familar?
1) -Fill tires to appropriate PSI.
- Turn ignition to the "ON" position, but do not turn the engine on.
- Press the "MENU" button on the EVIC until the screen reads "Retrain Tire Sensor-No"
- Press the "Step" button to confirm the relearn process.
- Press "MENU" again and the display should read "train left front tire".
- Place relearn magnet on the left front tire's valve stem until the horn honks.
- Continue the same process for the other tires in a clockwise pattern.
- The display should read "training complete". Then press "step", "C/T", "reset", "menu" buttons to complete the procedure.

3) - Inflate tires to the appropriate PSI.
- JustDrive the car for at least 10 minutes and maintain speeds above 15 MPH.
Then another site said to take it to someone with a scan tool to clear it?
