So I find this guy online selling a dodge camper and go to check it out. There in his yard sat a 74 dodge dart in restorable condition. I asked him about it and he wanted 300 bux ofr it. BUT there is a but. He said it was an abandoned vehicle from the katrina hurricane and has no title. he's selling it for parts only. I want to buy this car restore it and drive it. I just don't know how to go about filing for an abondoned vehicle title in my state. I looked on their website and not a single topic about it. I tried calling the DMV from Wisconsin and got put on hold until my phone died. Anybody know the specifics on titling an abandoned vehicle ?

Your best bet would be to call them and talk to someone there about it.

Abandoned Vehicles on your Property
There is a form to fill out at your dmv office, then you wait about a month to get the owners info back from dmv, cause there might be a lein on it, if there is a lein on the car the dmv will give you there contact info, so you can call the lein holder to tell them to pick it up, if i were you and the car has a lein on it i would charge the bank something like 30 dollars a day storage so you make a good chunk of change off them, If there is no lein on the car , all you will have to do if fill out the dmv form try to contact the owner like twice then goto the court and get a title... IF THE CAR HAS A LEIN AND THE BANK KNOWS YOU HAVE THE CAR THEY WILL TRY TO TAKE IT FROM YOU INSTEAD OF PAYING YOU STORAGE.

More input:

If it is on your property AND it is abandoned, depending on your state's laws you can go to the MVA and give them the year, make, model, VIN numbers and ask for a title. You may also need to get a piece of paper from the municiplaity or county enforcement agency (like the police) stating that the vehicle is abandoned. The the MVA can get you a title.

It is according to the year of the Vehicle. for many of the older vehicles the titles will be purged from the states system so you may want to get`a new title from a Title service like How to Get Lost Car Title Vehicle Title Replacement Service :: GetNewTitle. They can also get titles for newer vehicles that have been abandon in most states and in short tme.

Vehicle is not on my property it is on the guy who is selling it's property. He claims a friend brought it up from down south in the katrina mess. I was thinking about just buying it and making it a project and never reporting anything to anyone but I do wish I could drive it to town on a hot summer night and show the boys some american muscle and maybe a little thunder so I plan on getting it registered now. Will definitely post pics if I do decide to pick it up and will call the local DMV tomorrow and see whats up.

Your local state law may also not allow it to be registered if it has water damage.
You may need to check into that, especially if your state requires any safety inspection before certifying for street use.
Pretty much every Canadian province will only allow a water damaged car for salvage, and I'm pretty sure a lot of US states are the same.

I grew up around musclecars and say pass up the 74 Dart. Unless it's mint and you can drive it just the way it is don't waste your time and effort. Nothing against them, I 've had 2. A 73 and a 74 Dart Sport. It's just that 73-76 Darts are not as desireable as pre 72's. With 69's and 70 being the most desireable.

If you are going to restore a Dart, get an older one. If it's in good enough condition to drive as is. Buy it and enjoy it. Mopars rock.

Bahhh decided not to pick it up. I did some research and decided not to. I drove by the other day and it was gone so I was too late anyway. I got my little beater mazda to fix up and I decided getting a 4wd truck to haul firewood this fall is more important than getting a toy this summer.
