I figured I'd ask, since I've gotten so many tips and tricks for my 'Trep from you guys.

My dad recently acquired a 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ as a fun little weekend warrior/project/boat hauler. It's a basic 4-banger with a manual gearbox that needs a little work. Mostly what he's wondering is what kind of transmission to look for, remanufactured or otherwise used. Are Jeep trannys easily interchangable from model to model? The reason I'm asking is because there are quite a few Cherokee trannys on Craigslist, but no Wrangler trannys that turn out.

OK, so now that I've had a chance to actually drive the thing, here's a few corrections:
It's got the I-6 4.0l, not a 4-banger. It grinds when shifting into 3rd, and sometimes when shifting into 5th, but not always. A good friend of mine (my car go-to guy when DI.net can't help) had a similar Jeep back in the day with similar tranny issues, and he said to just throw some Lucas Oil stuff in there.

Synchronizers are probably out of it. You can tear it apart and repair, (not a job for someone with no transmission experience), or have it repaired, or get a used one. Check car-part.com if that is the route you want to go.

Yeah, that's what I've read. My dad has rebuilt cars before, so he's fairly well-versed in stuff like that. But, he can drive it without grinding nearly all the time...Newbies like me can get it to grind in 3rd EVERY time.

not that bad at all had the same issue on my 97 Wrangler I rebuilt the tranny about 3 years ago kit was easier to find and much cheaper than a replacement junkyard transmission and you know what you have, unlike anything that comes from a junkyard

Are you kidding?? You do know why it is called a Grand Cherokee don't you? Minimum expense for repair if you do not do it .... a grand. Major problem with them from personal experience and learned through the jeep forum I was part of is the PCM is a notorious POS that fails on every model from 93 to 2004 at some point. No replacements for them either only remanufactured ones. Jeep knows this and refuses to make corrections or lift the copyright for outside vendors to make aftermarket units. The common sign for a PCM starting to fail is intermittent stalling out, sometimes staying down for a few minutes to hours. Taken to dealership they will tell you ... your fuel pump went ... claim to replace it and charge you but only do a cheap fix for the PCM and send you packing. beware the grand Cherokee even though it is the nicest looking inside and out and most comfortable of the line it has more problems than any Fiat ever dreamed of.


PCM controls: fuel pump, injectors, alternator, air conditioning, speed sensors.
common fail symptoms: stalling, speedometer goes crazy, battery dies all the time, ac deciding if It wants to work or not.
