I bought a black diamond/clear turns set a few years ago and am finally putting them in.

However I notice that the turns do not have any DOT marking on them. They have SAE, but not on the visibile part of the enclosure (IOW - you'd have to remove them from the vehicle to see that).

I'm pretty sure I've read that you have to use orange bulbs in clear turns to be legal - but I am wondering is that enough - do they also have to be marked as DOT compliant? I am in VA, which does everything by the book - so what you might get by with in other states wouldn't necessarily work here without legal issues.

Oh wait! I just had the brillliant idea to look for the DOT marking on the factory turns - and just like the clear ones, they do say 'SAE", but *no* mention of DOT. Yay!! - does that mean I'm in the clear (pun intended) as long as I use amber bulbs?

(The black diamonds are marked DOT - so they should be OK.)

Thanks for any comments to help with this decision and help me stay out of trouble.

I have the same set, hand me downs from a member. I have amber bulbs in there. IIRC, the manufacturer got in trouble for not having reflectors in them and had to add them, which is why you cant find the reflector free ones anymore. I would guess that a cop could give you a fix it ticket, if it ever crossed their minds.

I yanked my reflectors out of my head lights and also replaced the bulbs with clear ones (the amber ones coating peals and flakes off anyways). Never been pulled over but this is driving within Maine and Canada.

I looked into my clear turns after reading your post - and you're right - no reflectors (there are reflectors in the factory turns).

I thought all head/tail lights needed to be DOT-approved... :-l I wouldn't take a chance using them EVEN with amber bulbs if you say VA goes by the book... I know here In CA cops will pull you over for things like that. I think it's a waste of time but it's actually legal for cops to do that. I wouldn't risk it, personally.

The headlights *are* DOT. The clear turns are not - and neither are the factory originals - apparently there is no DOT stamp for the turns. When I started this thread, I was thinking the turns had to have a DOT mark - then I saw that the originals didn't have one either.

Auto parts stores and inspection stations here are telling me they will pass with the amber bulbs - no problem, as in - not "bending the law" - they are totally legal.
