Battery posts check

When to AA. Had them hook the car up to the battery tester. They hooked it up to the terminal posts. Scanner shows alternator ripple, low crank voltage, and not a good charge.

I then remove air box, and have them hook it up to the terminals directly.

Everything reads fine. Some times you just need to lead the horse to the water.

For a second there I thought I needed a new alternator.

Many testers I've seen lately have a question in the setup asking if you are connecting to the battery directly or at remote posts. Theirs may just be old.
Time for a post cleaning lol..

At the battery *and* at the jump post - either could be the problem.
The posts are all fine, it's just that the battery testers at advance auto are not meant to be hooked to the posts as they give false readings. When hooked to my battery, they were fine.

Even with known good connections - you know that for sure?
I'd be curious to hear someone's results from Advance Auto if they took their car there and compared battery test results of hooking the tester to the post terminals vs at the battery.

Some years ago, I had a bad (slightly loose) connection at the pos. jump post. Before I realized that that was the problem, I took it to Advance to test the battery. They clipped to the jump posts, and the test said the battery was bad. It tested bad because of the loose jump post conection.

My point is that if you *know* that the jump post connections are good, the battery test from the jump post should be valid.

I definitely agree that if you don't know if that connection is good, you should take the test results from the jump post with a grain of salt. Either rework that junction or - yes - measure at the battery if your goal is to test the battery.

You are saying that your jump post connections are good. I'm saying that in that case, no reason not to measure from there. The cautions about doing so are in the context of not knowing the condition of the jump post - the manuals and precautions are written to be very generic - they don't want to complicate things with explanations.

It would be interesting to compare though.
