Well, since it's looking like I'll have my Intrepid for another year or so.. I'm thinking about getting the engine flushed with that Bilstein system.... hopefully available at the dealer or somewhere else in town.

Who here has had it done to their cars and at what mileage? Did it make a noticeable difference? Did it cause any adverse affects? How much did it cost?

I know around here Pep Boys does it for $69.95 and I am going to have it done as soon as I unlazy myself.

I had the dealer do it at 60K and included an oil change. Cost me $100. Car ran like new afterwards. CLeaned out what little ammount of sludge was in the engine. I highly recomend it.

Before you spend your money on a engine flush you might want to go to the nutz & boltz site: www.motorminute.com/ and click on nutz & boltz newzletter. Takes some time to load the PDFile but it is worth it. Article starts on pg.1 and is continued on pg. 27 & 28. Just my $0.02:D

Interesting read.

I was a little skeptical of the whole procedure... not skeptical enough to not have it done... but after reading that, well, let's just say that any price wouldn't be good enough.

If the shop or dealer paid me to have it done, then I'd consider it. :)

Well after reading that i will save my self $60-$100 and keep changing my oil at every 3000 miles.

if you really want to do an engine flush... I head that a quart of ATF in the oil for a *short* time will help with that.

I personally will NEVER do that... but I would think that is the safest way (ATF is a VERY good friction reducer, and it also maintains viscosity over a wide temperature range).

The best thing to do is religious oil changes, change your water pump on time (all you 2.7L engine people), and always watch what it looks like when it comes out. if it is dirty and sludgy... do a second oil change after 50 miles or so.. and see if that removes the rest of whatever is in there.

Back in the "old days", when I was much younger, (I think "Ike" was still in office) ATF was used as a flush to quite noisy lifters. Seemed to work well, especially in the Olds OHV V8. You would drain the pan, put in 4 qts. of Dexron and let the enging idle for about 20 minutes with the radiator blocked so the engine would get good and hot. Let the engine sit for a hour to drain as much ATF as possible into the pan and then drain and fill with fresh oil and change the filter. I don't think ATF would cause any harm to todays engines but changing oil every 3K miles is still the best way to keep your engine healthy for many years. Just my $0.02.:alien:

I've always had the oil and filter changed every 3000-3200 miles... maybe once or twice going 4000.

Maybe that's why I've had absolutely no engine problems, weird noises, or rough operation.... and I'm now at almost 80K miles.

Wow...I guess that officially makes me old too...I remember the days of dumping in ATF to clear the lifters. I used to do that in my old '59 Chev pickup. Worked like a champ! I'm not sure I'd do it in today's motors though. Don't know if it would hurt or not, but I don't think I'll take the chance. That old 283 was tough as nails....I couldn't destroy it (I tried). These engines today are a lot more sensitive to abuse...

Given how crappy everyone seems to think the 2.7L engine is, I think it's at least noteworthy.

I used to own, and very dearly miss a 1995 Mazda 626 5-spd I4. I had Jiffy Lube do the Bilstein flush for $75 or something when the car had 240,000 miles. Lifter noise quieted a bit (most of it was caused by an oil pump design flaw) and it reved smoother and drove nicer overall.

That car didnt burn any oil (it did have an oil leak), drove perfectly, got 35mpg, looked perfect, and had not one flaw. Except I wanted a luxury car so these days I have an Infiniti Q45. :p

I recommend the flush.

The problem is a lot of today's cars rely on clever engineering instead of overcompensating for parts strength and durability to make things last.

wow my mechanic was talking about putting trans fluid in before my oil change to get rid of sludge, but i thought he was nuts and tryin to ruin my engeine
