Well.......I couldn't take it anymore.....I bought a portable GPS unit.

Some of you might say: "Hey, don't you have an RB1?", and to that I would respond: "Yes, and I love it!"

........buuuuuuuuuut, now I'm stuck driving the Civic and coming Monday, a '94 Mercury Grand Marquis LS. I NEED nav since my RB1 has spoiled me.

So I just ordered a TomTom One nav unit for $200. I thought it was a pretty good deal, and I don't need anything advanced. My dad has a Garmin C330, and it's quite nice, but the TomTom did slightly better in Consumer Reports......so I'm not too worried.

Well, it's a refurb from Futureshop.ca

They're also offering $10 off online purchases of $200 or more (so add a 25 pack of Verbatim blank DVD's for $4.99 to put it over $200). I ordered a network hard drive for $100 and the blank DVD's to put it over $300, and I got $25 off the purchase.

We as Canadians get screwed on prices, I'm used to it :( ESPECIALLY now that the Canadian dollar is going to be higher than the US dollar in a few weeks........and we're still paying 20 - 30% more for everything.

98.6 cents US gets $1 CDN as of yesterday  A few years ago (before Iraq) it was 66 cents US for $1 CDN. I need to do some cross border shopping! Also doesn't hurt that the US is in a recession, and business in Canada is booming. I know that if I drive to Alberta, there are at least 250,000 jobs that could be filled immediately, too bad there's nowhere to live since they can't build houses fast enough. :icon_cry:

Kinda ironic.........we have hundreds of rich homeless people.

GPS is free. It works by collecting signals from satellites, comparing the time signal being broadcast by each, going through some complex calculations to determine how far you are from each satellite, and somehow triangulating your position based upon that data.

Read up here if you REALLY want to know how it works...

There are satellites in outer space that basically broadcasts signals precise signals that the GPS units will pick up. By receiving three or more signals from different satellites, the GPS unit is able to figure out where it is by measuring the time it takes the signal to get from the satellite to the receiver.

Think of it like how on TV shows, they show how phone companies can triangulate a cellphone by locating which cell antennas are receiving a signal from a cell phone. But GPS is a much more complex system.

All the map data is stored on the GPS device itself. With the information that it gets from the satellites, it's able then to map its location and display it on the screen for you.

There's no monthly charge or cell phone connection of any kind. These GPS units in particular have map data on SD Memory cards that can be updated by downloading new maps in the future and saving it onto the memory card. Some other systems, like the RB1, has map data on a DVD and you can buy updated dvd's.

Some of the smaller handheld ones in the past could only hold maps for a small area and needs to be hooked up to a computer to update them. These in particular has map data for the entire country (maybe even more) on a memory card.

That's basically it in a nutshell.

**EDIT**
And again, I take the time to write out a detailed response and someone else swoops in and makes me look like an ass. Haha. :)

i saw the magellan unit also for $199 at K-mart last week on sale....I looked up their specs on different sites and saw alot of comparisons and peoples testimonies about the units and it seems like the tom tom unit got alot more happy people and less mistakes on directions....it also had a voice direction feature that I don't think the magellan had? or perhaps I'm wrong, it has been a week since I checked them out..anyhow, thank you for the explanation..I really wasn't sure....I am gonna get one now for sure....

I don't have my Sunday Ads anymore, but if any of you have a place called InkStop near you, they have a couple GPS units between $150 and $200 that not only were touchscreens like these Tomtoms, they also had MP3 and AVI capabilities so that people can watch movies on it while it's not in use.

I haven't personally checked them out myself, but have been meaning to. Especially if they don't have a restocking fee, I figure it might be worth it to give it a test run to see how good or bad they are, especially cause I have a 2 year old daughter that would love to be able to watch movies on it (instead of my Creative Zen Vision W).

http://www.inkstop.net/index.html

Their website doesn't have product listing nor does it even have their sunday flyer online, but it does have a store locator.

I know this post is almost useless without the actual make and models of the units, but figured if some of you live near a store, it might be worth the trip to check them out. Again, the screen size is just as big as the tomtom's and they are touchscreen. The maps come on SD cards just like the tomtom, but unlike the tomtom, they also play MP3's and movies that you can store on additional SD cards, which you can find for $15 for a 2GB card.

Nah, you didn't look like an ass, your description was far better than mine. I just threw together a quicky, yours was more precise. I've had that same thing happen a number of times to me, matter of fact, just a couple seconds ago on another post...

And again, since there was such interest in cheap GPS units, here's one for $150 at JR.com. I buy lots of high end photography stuff from them. Real reputable place. Normal price is $200, but this is their weekend special.

This price is better than Sam's Club's price. Sam's has been selling this unit for awhile so I'm guessing that it's gotta be decent.
