You never gap platinum plugs, they come pre-set.

It depends...If they are protected by the plastic or cardboard sleeve, you shouldn't need to gap them. But if not, they rattle around in the box and the gap can be "closed" due to shipping/handling.

ALSO...check the manufacturers catalogs...they will tell you what each plug is pre-gapped at from the factory. Verify that figure against the vehicle specs that you're installing the plugs into.

IMHO I'd gap any single electrode plug.
If you insist on not gapping them at least make sure they are all the same.
I'd rather have the all too big or too small by a couple of thou but I wouldn't feel right if they were all firing at a different gap.

The advice to not gap single electrode platinum plugs is very wrong. Auto Zone insisted that they be gapped and I found that of the six plugs I purchased, the facotry gap ranged from .022 to .060. The correct gap for my application is .048 to .053 so you can see clearly these Bosch single electrode platinum plugs even with the little cardboard rings in the packaging to protect the ends needed to be gapped. I do appreciate everyone's input though.

Does the catalog specify what they pre-gap their plugs at? It doesn't sound like they're pre-gapped at all with those ranges. Maybe they (manufacturers) don't do it any more?? When I worked for AlliedSignal, I could almost always count on the pre-gap specs on my Autolites to be accurate. Even then, I always gap mine anyway to make sure.

I think it's just the +2 and +4 that are factory gapped to a setting that suits all cars.

as I got told, you want to avoid gapping platinum plugs because it can cause a weak spot in the electrode and when under a full load or high rpm state that point in the electrode will become weakend and eventualy break off...... this is how I got told from all the people that I worked with at pepboys who were all hardened car people (sounds like a joke, but these guys had at one point in time owned thier own repair shops)

The +2's and +4's platinum plugs are ungappible and factory set. the reason for being ungappible is that the electrods don't come over the top of the plug, they come up along side it coming into a center area. Basicaly the spart is coming from the center of the plug and doesn't have to go around the electrode.

As I said a while back the +2's and +4's are great plugs when using MSD or some other ingition inhancement, allowing a centered explosion with a greater ground surface area.

No, single gap plugs are not pregapped. For one thing, the same plug may be used on several different engines. I don't know where your pep boys people ever got that info, but just check with the manufacturer. They advise gapping them. If you are damaging the electrodes, you better learn the proper way to gap, then. In my 40 some years of driving and changing/gapping my plugs (I learned the benefits of platinum plugs close to 40 years ago) I have never seen or heard of a broken electrode. I assume you mean the ground one; if you mean the center one, then DEFINITELY see my comment above about learning how to adjust the gap.

Always check the gap on your single electrode plug unless they come from OEM manufacturer and are made just for your model.
