Canadian Tire is advertising that Electro - Rust proofing gizmo that sells for around $100 'eh'. It mounts in the engine compartment and sends out some kind of elctric shield that inhibits rust from starting or spreading. Its supposed to be what they use on snow plows. Not sure if thats the kind of rust proofing yer talking 'aboot'.

(Had to add in the Canadianisms so you could tell I was from Canada 'eh')

My mechanic in Kitchener does oil spraying for $40. Supposed to be done every year. If you have the doors and trunk done, they may leak oil (I'd just have the underbody sprayed).

They'd spray the underside of the car........so the bottom of your engine would be oily. If you have them spray the hood, that'll be oily too.

........which is why I haven't had it done :(

You can just buy a couple of cans of under coating (Autozone, etc...), lift your car up in the air with a lift( or get it high enough on "JACK STANDS", and wash the bottom of teh car REALLLL GOOOD, and let it dry, then start undercoating the unibody, I personally wouldnt undercoat the bottom of the engine, I would prime everything under the engine(oilpan, tranny pan, manifolds, etc...), You will need atleast 3 good coats of that Undercoating, to be a good application!, thats it! hope this helps out guys!, ;)

Krown Rust Proofing all the way. I got a 93 Eagle Vision with not an inch of rust on it and it is always winter driven, got 250k on the car. It's about $80, does a great job. I highly recommend it. Its oily like the others said but it stops dripping within 2 days and then do a normal warm soapy car wash and the residue is gone. I'm working on getting pics of my car up so you can see how they spray cause i get my doors ect. done so they drill holes to get every inch covered.

Hey Ciprian,

I've always used Rust Check in Mississauga on 777 Dundas St. W., I've been going there since the late 1980's. Had my '72 Charger done for many years before I took it off the road in '92 (it's awaiting restoration), my '92 Sundance which I bought new and drove for 13 years with over 300,000kms was done there with no rust anywhere, also a 2001 Neon which I traded in to buy my '01 r/t in 2005.

I got the R/T done last October and went with the no-drip type only because it was the first application and it puts a black sticky covering on the undercarriage that lasts a few years. This year I am switching to the regular protection, yes it drips for a few days but I don’t mind. I believe it cost me between $112 – $120, have to check the invoice. Yes they drill holes but only where necessary and it is very good coverage of all the seams and moving parts. They even threw in a free can for me, took about 15 – 20 minutes to complete, it’s best to make an appointment as they are always busy.

In my opinion spraying with cans is good for maintenance or touch ups but does not do as good a job as getting it professionally done, they reach places you wouldn’t be able to because of the equipment they use. I’ve lived in Mississauga, Brampton and now Oakville and always travel to this location. Sorry for the length, just trying to be informative. – Alan.

Thanks once again.

is this a canadian thing? Ive never seen it except on Sebs car (bimmer)
They use a ton of salt on the roads up here in winter so it'll kill a new car in a matter of years. Around here cars rust out faster than then you can blow the engine on them.

u mean rust proofing????

ya its a Canadian thing since our winters are full of salt and shitty weather. Plus i missed the deadline to buy underground parking at my school so i will be parking outside in that drizzle, freezing rain and such.

Do 'Treps rust out up there? I've never seen a rusty one in Missouri, and although we don't get winters as severe as yours, there's a lot of salt spread every time a snowflake falls.
Ziebart? Let me tell you my experience. It was many years ago now, but I bought a new '76 Dodge Aspen wagon and immediately took it to Ziebart. Cost me $135 back then. Z's warranty was for 5 yrs. At 5 yrs and 1 day the car began to rust. When it eventually got so bad in the rear quarters I felt the need to fix it, I found they hadn't bothered to treat it at all in those areas. Being a wagon, some removal of inside trim was necessary to reach those areas, and they obviously didn't want to go to the trouble. The front fenders, despite Ziebart treatment, rusted through about the same time. So as far as I'm concerned, thumbs down on them.
I rustproofed my '63 Valiant with melted parafin wax mixed into transmission fluid. Solidifies upon cooling, can be brushed on or squirted into cracks if you warm it first (caution-flammable). Whenever the car gets good & hot in the summer, the oil leaches out and flows, penetrating small nooks & crannies. Never got rust on that car, and it went thru many winters.

Never had "rust proofing" done on the Intrepid when I had it. Sold it at 11 years old (93 model year) and never had any rust on it, anywhere. Had the Dakota "rust proofed" though, the dealer threw that into the deal, along with free oil changes so I wasn't going to complain.
