(EXHAUST)Car in shop again... gotta ask you guys some questions

My car is in the shop again. Check engine light and eating too much fuel.
The guy at the shop said I should change the headers, oxygen sensors and the muffler in the middle... So since he has to do this I was thinking about a custom exhaust(or so...) for the same price... Can I not have a muffler in the middle and just change the one in the rear ? I was thinking of getting a Flowmaster 80 exhaust. Any ideas/suggestions ?

Ok so I found out some more info from the other site and I was wondering how loud will it be if I remove the resonator and the other resonator(or muffler) before the tip and install a Flowmaster 80 in the place of the middle muffler ? Anyone got a sound clip ?

check other site for a response to your question there.

As to a sound clip, check out youtube.

I know shadowvox has a clip on there of his special doing a dyno run with (I think) flowmasters on it.

Rob, that's what I will do if the middle muffler is the one I have to replace. So how's the sound on your car ? could u describe it a bit ?
I checked and replied on the other site, Great White. Thanks for the answer.

Um why do you need to have the muffler replaced for MPG? Im lost here.
But to answer your second Q; I have the muffler cut off of mine and replaced with a pipe. Not too loud, has a nice tone, but sounds a little ricey after 4grand.

Rob's car sounds really nice...deep throaty sound, but not too loud as to wake up the neighbourhood.

A good excuse to change the muffler(which is rusted and sounds ricey) is not too bad. Will the headers off a 2.7 fit a 3.5HO ?
The joys of someone (your mechanic?)who doesn't know what he is doing....................
You cannot use the smaller 2.7 exhaust system - far too much back pressure, the exhaust manifolds are not interchangable.
He should have known that and got the right parts before starting the job.

If you are going to go custom, have dual 2 1/4" pipes back to the muffler - use a 2 X 2 1/4" in X 2 X 2 1/2 out muffler. Leave off the rear resonators.
Will sound a little loud and raspy under full throttle, but should be OK for day-to-day driving.

He didn't actually get 2.7 headers.. I have some laying around and was trying to see if they would fit. The car is done right now... he put a stock muffler in there without letting me know... he told my father who is the one who brang the car to the garage while I was at school. Anyways, I was wondering, How would the sound be If I removed the muffler before the tip ? O and Ross, I believe I have 2 1/2" piping since it's a R/T.

What does he mean he Y-piped the exhaust ? I believe he also removed the front resonator... I'm talking about removing only the one in the back. And keeping the stock (silent as hell) muffler. I hate the new muffler. I love hearing my engine while rolling around, and with the new muffler I can't hear anything.

Go to youtube, type in 300m exhaust or Intrepid exhaust, you'll get multiple hits for lots of video clips.

I did the same and the link I posted was just the first one that came up.

Cheers

OK, sorry, I thought you had a 2.7.
If all that is the case then, he is out in the wilds, since that would have absolutely nothing to do with the performance unless the stock muffler was so plugged up as to not flow, and that is highly unlikely.
Why would he need to weld the manifolds, they shouldn't break, couldn't he use the ones from your old engine?
If not I have a pair.

Why did he say change the headers? Unless they are cracked. Why? The O2 if its bad. Him watching a scanner should tell him if its bad. And as for the Middle muffler. The questions is why? To fix your problem, if your O2 is bad. Then thats it. If you just want to do the other stuff as well. Ok. I had a series 40 put on mine and had it chopped off at the cats. So, all I have is the flowmaster. Sucker is loud. It does have a tinny sound at around 2500 rpm. But quickly goes away if you let off or get on it.

I still say why on the header tho.
