So, for the first time ever...I locked myself out of my Intrepid.

I lost my spare factory key a few years back...and I once tried to take my key to Lowes to have them copy it, but they said they didn't have the blank for it.

Do I need to get a copy from a dealer? Also, does my key have a chip in it that is required to use it to start the car?

I have a 2001 Intrepid R/T.

Thanks!

first is your key the big grey on or the skinny black one?
but if you say your car is a 2001 your mostlikely to have the grey one
the black key anyplace can do it but for the grey one only the dealer, cuz they need to program the chip in key to be able to start the car, if the key is not programed you can only open the doors,

Well that's good. They should be able to copy it no problem then, try another store.

Yep, you'll be able to get the key copied anywhere that has a blank.

The grey round key is the big money key. That one has to be programmed. Often 125$ or so by the time the dealer does it for you.

$88 in Canada, but believe it or not you need an appointment to get it done since its a service dept job.
