So the check engine lil deal pops up a few weeks back in my car and i go get it checked with those lil computer devices and the dude at auto zone shows me it says that the cat converter is getting clogged.


i go to a muffler shop and they tell me that due to where my cat converter is on my intrepid that it will cost 400 dollars to replace..

Is that too much or is that the price it would cost to replace a cat on a intrepid?

The cars been driving smooth but these past few days i felt it driving a lil rough and making the same sound my last car did when i had to have the cat converter replaced.

my mechanic said it will unclog itself, what ever that means? What would yall do?

What is the code you are getting, and which engine?

It is extremely rare for these cats to clog or break up, unless there is another underlying engine problem, a serious one at that. These cats are constructed out of a wire mesh, so are unable to "break up", or melt, unlike many other vehicles. If clogged or damaged, they will not "unclog" themselves either.

It is more common for the catalysts in these to deteriorate, reducing their ability to store oxygen. That should give you a P0420 or 0421 code.

I beg to differ about the cat's not breaking up as I had to replace mine on my 94', Then again apparently my lower rod bearings were going out when I bought the car as the engine froze up on the 7th. But anyways $400 is way too much for these cats. I had mine replaced for less than $200 when it went bad. So I think you need to tell that mechanic to go to hell. Then again these cars do have 3 cats on them. 2 pre-cats and then 1 cat. Which one is it thats bad or do you know?

The ones on the 2nd gen are not the same as the ones on your 1st gen Richard. As for it being rare, I am in the minority that have had them replaced, both actually only a few weeks ago were replaced at the dealership still under warranty. Dan is correct on the codes. You can get those by doing the key dance, you don't need a code reader to get them.
As for serious underlying problems I am going to say my car runs great and hopefully chalk it up to bad cats from the start or the previous owner using shitty gas for long periods of time. My car has 60,*** miles on it.
BTW at the dealer the cats were about $700 plus labor if you were to pay to have it done. Federal warranty for emissions is 80,000 miles and 8 years if I remember what the dealer said.

As Art mentioned, the 1st gen cats are a different construction than the 2nd gens. The second gens are a wire mesh, so they cant break up in to pieces and rattle like heck.

2nd gens also just have 2 cats, one at each exhaust manifold.

1st gens have 2 precats on the downpipes from the headers and then one big cat that both downpipes connect to.

The dude at the muffler shop showed me where the cat was and it was under the transmission. He said due to where it was at the cost was 400 dollars.

He said not to be worried about it since it was driving fine but lately its been making that ugly bad rough scratching sound. I might have to plunk down those 400 and have it replaced.:bash:

That is a resonator. The cats are on each side of the engine, right at the exhaust manifolds, providing we are talking about your 1999. Sounds like you might want to find a different mechanic...

So there under the hood? not under the transmission? how much would it cost then to replace a cat converter that was getting clogged?
