Chip suggestion/Question for the lot of us!

2369 Views 24 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  btc909
I'm still a newbie, but I keep reading about the lack of a chip, or any aftermarket tune ups for the R/T.

It dawned on me that this site has something like 400 members or more, has anyone ever tried to lobby a major High Performance Chip maker to build chips for us? IS Dodge somehow preventing this from being accomplished.

Seems to me that in this ecomony, 400 guranteed sells banging at your door might cause Mr Chip Sales manager to take notice.

Any thoughts? It wouldn't take much to get everyone to rally around this...

Thanks,

R/T

BTW Test driving my potential R/T tomorrow !!!

One more thing... if this works, I don't want to be considered a Junior Member anymore. Whats that all about!!!
One problem is not all of the 400 would use the same chip since some (I think most) are first gen owners. Also the different sized engines would probably require different chips. So, I doubt there's even 100 of the same gen/engine in the forum right now.

As for the member thing, it goes by how many posts you've made. Just start posting like crazy and it will change!
Still, think about how many of us stop and talk to intrepid owners, of any gen, and either mention this site or the mods done, or hope to do.

I think the upside of potential business would warrant consideration anyway. Perhaps one of our fearless moderators might make the initial contact, and go from there.

The fact that there would be different chips is not neccesarily a bad thing I think.

BTW, this maybe a stupid question, but hows your weather today!
FYI, just so you know, I stopped by the first chip maker I found on the web. Turns out, (this may be common knowledge) they do make chips for the first gen 93-95. Don't know about 95-97, and what would have changed. I suspect Dodge doesn't want these things out there. (Unless they are getting in on the action)

Also, emailed the sales dept asking the question, WHY, WHEN, etc... Mentioned DI.net, gave them a link, and stated they have an opportunity for $$$.

BTW, here's the link for all interested.

There are 3 reasons that there is no chip out there for the R/T's or second generations.

#1, is the complexity of the PCM, its not just a chip but a whole new pcm would be required and Chrysler radically changed its software a few years back and a lot of encription was installed along with it. EASE Diags just recently came out with a PCM reader software and they are the top dogs in the PC based engine managment systems, it took them a long time to decode Chrysler.

#2 The 3.2/3.5 L are already programmed for very high output, there is not much to be gained in a chip anyway. Mabe a few HP here and there but not much to justify development and the cost of replacing entire PCM's.

#3 Security, because the entire PCM is replaced, all security systems would shut down the car, this is why you can't put a 300M PCM in an Intrepid with out replacing the Security Key. Only the dealer can replace a pcm.
YEA...what he said! :)
The security issues surely make sense as to why it is so difficult to mod the PCM. Guess we'll have to work on finding a suitable Turbo/Supercharger and a PCM modification for the boost that package.
I KNOW we have no room under the hood but something can be worked out. The Intake & Exhaust mods a few of us have done puts a 3.2L well over 250HP. I think the biggest thing we can do right now is figure how we can beef up our TRANNY so it doesn't end up shredded on the road in. (My tranny lines leak now, right in front of the driver, behind the radiator..but only after my wife drives it. She drives like a granny! I can do my best to redline and it stays sealed up.)
We certainly have a winding path ahead of us.
i doubt an intake mod and an exhaust mod add up to 30hp. maybe 5 or 10 at the very, very most.

y'all have to keep in mind too, as GR8WHT said, these engines are already tuned for very high output. look at the 3.5's numbers. those are V-8 numbers when considering an application like this (Lincoln LS, to name one). the 2.7, if i'm not mistaken, was once the most finely tuned engine mass produced, that is, the most hp out of the least displacement. chrysler tweaked the engines out with software, so "real" performance gains are almost certainly going to be physical changes.
I see what you guys mean about the 2nd gen's, but what about us measely 1st genn's?

I think there are enough of us on here that own 95-97 treps that would buy a chip if it were made... and in this case, I think superchips is the company to go to. They are the only ones who make any chip. Theres definately enough customers with a 3.5, and probably enough with a 3.3 as well

Also, I remember reading in another post yesterday that the 2nd gen treps have the same exact tranny as us 1st genners, and the engines are basically the same, just tweaked better or whatnot.....

What im saying is that the potential is there, and we dont have to worry bout our trannies that much... I had my 90k tranny service done at 103k, and my mechanic said it was overdue, but it looked fine.

Mabey I'll give superchips a call...

Why ya tryin to bust my balls about intake and exhaust mods? Lister already got the numbers for his intake alone. That, TB, & exhaust surely do 20HP :p
i'm not calling you a liar, i just think you're being a little optimistic.
Your NOT A Junior Member. Second Gen Intrepid put out enough power (except for the 2.7 sorry) but it's all LOST at the dam tranny. Fix the tranny & level of performance will make your jaw drop. Well we know about the anti foam with cuts down on the time for each gear change which doesn't help the power loss but it will help with the time lost in gear changes. Their IS an update to the tanny for 98 models. If you want the info let me know (they left a sticker under the hood). NO your dealer probably isn't going to know about it. Their always tons of known issues on any & ever car out their (I'll find the site again if someone wants the list). This PCM update only applies to the 98's only. It did help my performance especially up hills.

SUPPOSDLY their is a tranny mod, what I dunno, but I can talk to a Chrysler tranny guy (when I get some cash) & find out if something can be done.

Sorry man, moderators are appointed. If the number of posts you had determined moderators, I think we would end up with too many moderators :)
MAJOR UPDATE ON COMPUTER UPGRADE!!

In the fall issue of MOPAR NOW, there is an advertisement on Kenne Bell's computer "optimizer II" for the Intrepid and other Chrysler products which costs $349 and states the following:
-Up to 25 more HP
-More torque at any rpm
-Quicker acceleration
-Faster throttle response
-Re-calibrated fuel and spark maps
-Improved transmission shifting (electronic)
-Kenne Bell calibrated. No "self tuning" required

I haven't bought this yet, but if it seems to really work like it claims, I would be very interested. Has anyone else heard of this one yet?
:D
