'02 300m This past week, the Tach, Speedo, Fuel and Temp gauge lights went out, the Mileage and Gear Indicator lights work.
All the lights, signal ,brights, ABS, radio, etc. still function as normal.
All the Auto Headlight Switch functions work correctly.
I read in a post here, did multiple searches but couldn't find it, that the lighting for the cluster is not done with bulbs.
That being said I need to find out what produces the lighting and can it be tested/repaired.
If not I guess I'd have to buy another cluster and hope the cluster lights up.
Maybe someone recalls the post/problem.

Check your PM Phil. A cluster swap is what's needed. 300m has Electro-Luminescent lighting and the transformer in yours has failed. A common problem.

I have a similar problem,my cluster lights for my speedometer,Gas gauges,Temp guages Lights work sometime and they dont work at times do I need to replace the transformer also or is there a short somewhere? I`m new here so any help would be helpful.

Just replace the whole cluster. You can't buy just the transformer. Used clusters are cheap especially for standard 300m.

Interesting, So the problem is with the cluster itself.... I've Always wondered what this problem is. My Gauge cluster light comes and goes too.... Now, if the transformer is the problem, Why is it that the transformer can't be replaced or repaired? is this so called transformer not Accessible? I can remove the Cluster easily in no time at all and I have an electrician that can repair/replace it, if It can be accessed. Because, Why replace it if it can be fixed? Plus, Mine is a Special with the 150MPH Limit, So its not a lot of them around like the Base M's, Yea I know I can replace is for about $60-$100... But, anyway, My other concern is, Is it possible that the cluster light going in and out could be affecting the interior lights too? Because, My interior lights flickers often as well {It doesn't go out light the cluster lighting) but it does flicker quite significantly.

You would have to desolder a transformer from another 300m cluster board and then solder it onto yours. Transformers for the EL lighting are the same between Special and Standard 300m clusters. If you have a Special....you can't just do a board swap from a standard 300m cluster. The calibration is different on the circuit board for the different speedometer drive motors.

It's a lot of work for a transformer swap that might not work or get damaged in the transfer. Special and Standard clusters can be directly swapped in/out without any programming. So if you need the lighting bad enough you can always put a standard cluster in no problems or modifications.


I've bought standard 300m clusters for under $30.....think I have 1 or 2 around.

****, didn't pay attention to this thread before. I removed the transformer from one cluster before and was about to install it in another when I found a piss poor solder on one or two of the 5 pins of the faulty cluster. Took the soldering iron and added a little more solder to those connections and it worked fine after. Try that first before looking for a used cluster to swap out or transplant a transformer from.
