Hey guys just thought I would add one of my ideas here.

When I had my car hooked up to my laptop (OBDSoftware.net) I was watching my Air intake Temp and noticed that it gets really up there. So I did some searching for CAI's, Mainly for the tubing cause I already bought a K & N filter for stock box. sent a msg to one of the members that sells them and unfortunately the quote I got was too expensive. (Wife would bust a gasket). Anyways did some mesurements and came up with this.

3 in ABS pipling (only need about 2 feet), 1 90degree male -male bend, 1 45 degree male-female bend, 1 3 in to 3 in Rubber coupling & Aluminum tape, ABS cement.

Stock items- Air filter box, and Tube coming off TB (has intake air temp sensor)

So here's the run down:

1 cut one piece 7 1/2 inch (goes into Tube), attach Right angle
2 cut one piece 6 3/4 goes into end of right angle other into rubber coupling.
adjust for angles ABS cement together let dry.

Now I was just gonna paint it but then science kicked in "Heat was still a factor" Wrap the whole thing in the Aluminum tape except for the rubber. while your at it do the box also.

Gonna post some pics when I'm done. As for the tube that comes from the crank case I just put a little filter on that.

*****Now just a thought. the box pulls air from the fender I'm thinking of cutting a hole in the bottom and running a pipe just beside or below the battery to scoop some more cool air. any ideas on this?******

I like how you think, and congratulations on using ABS, not PVC.

I also like how aluminum tape would both reflect, and dress up - but what about using the aluminum insulating tape that has a layer of bubble wrap under it?

I've always used abs. That's what I was told to use years ago but have always wondered why. Can someone shed some light on this abs vs PVC?

Cool thanks kinda figured that but wasn't sure. As for the bubble wrap gotta see whats available. What do you think about the second intake?

I was gonna run that second intake idea like you were talking about. You know either route it behind the bumper or just below it to give it a sort of a ram air effect. I never got to test it out though because my car kind of went kablooey before I had a chance.

Yeah took a look around gonna have to do some guestimating... want to put 3 inch but just might only beable to do 2.

anyways here's some pics not my best taping job but it still looks good non the less. I don't really take it any shows lol..

Does anyone know if the cone filters do a better job of filtering dirt than the drop-in performance filters? I have a Fram Air-Hog filter and you can almost look right through it. This looks like a nice option, and won't have to deal with that dumb breather those that always gets distorted on me.

look in my pics i have build one with 3in abs piping, k&n #RX-4730 high-flow air filter insulated aluminum foil that can got to 2000 degree, home made heatshield + insulated foil.... etc....

i remove the breather and re-plug it in the cold air intake because someone told me that the oil vapor exiting from here are there to lubricate the top of your engine where there is no oil ..... i dont know if this true.....

but i notice much much greater fuel economy without the breather for sure !!!

Cone filters draw in more air. It depends on the filter how much is filtered out. K&n is good for air and filtration. I live on a dirt road and it does good. As for the breather it doesn't lube or our air temp sensor would be soaked. As for economy I have instant m/g and average and it didn't change. I've also hooked it up to my scan software and no change when hose or breather filter is connected.

I have 3 inch piping in there right now what I want to do is open a hole in the bottom of the box for another inlet.

I actually moved my battery to the trunk.

Also have a K&N CAI Kit with Cone Filter thanks to Tom

Current plan is to drop it with custom tubing down to the bottom of the wheel well, then create a custom heat shield that uses a rubber seal along the top of said heat shield to seal against the hood completely when its closed. I figured if I do this, and have a fully-extended heat shield (all the way through the engine compartment) then itll give me a TRUE CAI, and not just a short ram intake.

Next, and final step, woulbe to do what RCE2WIN did, and when I have a new bumper put on, Im going to have a vent cover installed in the bumper about 2 inches forward of where the filter sits in the wheel well. This will be covered with mesh along the inside to keep heavy debris out. All in all, should drop intake temp by at least 10 degrees or so.

If filtration is high up on your priority list, you will use a good paper filter.

I'm not saying don't use one - just saying be aware of what you are and aren't getting with it. IOW, make an informed decision, not one based on marketing hype.

My previous post is made from observation not Market hype. Previously I've used stock. then wanted performance filter looked around and got K&N (cost and availability) then tested it compared to paper. ie used it for a year and it filters pretty good. Not saying it's the absolute best filter for dust but it works prety good non the less.

To answer this better for you. No performance filters don't filter beter then a good papper one. But from my experience, because I've used both cone and box. Cones suck in better (360 deg) boxes tend to be restrictive ( one port coming in from fender). As for filtration, again from experience I can't even remotely see though a K&N and when I clean it every two months my sink gets pretty dirty. My suggestion if you can see though it it's not filtering out alot. Do some looking around at other filters, But listen to what Peva says, don't fall for Hype, don't be afraid to open the boxes and look at filters (pisses off some places but hey this is my investment here)

when i look in my air intake pipe i can see some very very little dust when k&n cone air filter is on... when i use my original box there is 0 dust in pipe.........

Sounds like we are in agreement. Our discussion may be beneficial to anyone who isn't already aware of these "things that Mama didn't tell you". :)

Any given filter media has an inherent "restriction per unit area" factor. Let's say paper is 0.3 and K&N is 0.6 (I'm making up these numbers). That just means you can accomplish the same perfromance but let less ingested dirt, if you put two of the same size paper filter on the same tube - kind of like the first gen. LH's. Any way you could squeeze two filter boxes where the battery was? Not necessarily that you'd want to - just some food for thought.

After having my intake the way it is with ABS piping.. gonna take it one step further. Got my hands on 15 inches of aluminum tubing from Vibrant. Gonna cut that and also picked up some silicon bends. Gonna clean it up.. I'll post pics as soon as it's done.

I had actually thought about using some alum. tubing and some of the bend pieces from autozone to build a CAI. Buddy of mine did this on is older 'maro but did a dual CAI intake.

Haven't got around to it yet (other mods) but switching to aluminum. Getting 15 inches of 3 in diameter and a 90 & 45 silicone bends. Gonna have them by the end of the month so when it's done ill post some pics.

Got all the pieces didn't cost me that much.. found out one good thing.. In Ontario if you look at my pics you will see a crankcase filter.. the place I went to had an info session going on and there were cops there and I was informed that because my car falls into the emission standards and it has tubing to recoup the fumes, that venting them like that is actually subject up to a $1000 fine. So the new tubing has the inlet so I can get rid of the vent.
