:anon: My car has this oem slight orange peel. My question is, is there enough clear coat from the factory, to color sand the clearcoat to get a better shine/finish to my paint job without going thru the clear coat and into the base coat.
Has anyone done this to a stock paint job?? :fun_06:

The short answer: no.

While most factory brochures will brag about their "Amazing 21 Step Paint Process" you wont be successful in color sanding and buffing the car for a number of reasons (including the minimal thickness of the clear). Color sanding in general is something that is best left up to professionals. I once painted a 54 Ford only to have to repaint the entire front end after the owner went wild with color sanding and went through the clear. My suggestion would be to go with a real aggressive paint cleaner system to rid the surface of imperfections rather than trying to resurface the paint.

Hey, come on now! All I am asking for is perfect. Thanks, it looked like it was viable. So a re-paint is required to make the paint thick enough.

Do not make me call the intervention group.
I think an intervention group is something that should come with this site.

No..................I am not kidding.

See, I got this idea of color sanding when my wifes 96 Honda clear coat on the rear quarter and the rear bumper started to discolor. I sanded it slightly starting with 400, then 600, to 1000, to 2000, then rubbing coumpond then polishing compound and finally mothers scratch remover. It now looks fabulous.

So I thought......... Hey!!! The Trep!!!!!!
