I've heard different ways of doing colored badges, like putting decals over them, removing them to paint them and painting them while they are on. What is the best method of doing it?

one way you could do it, it to get some epoxy resin stuff at a crafts store, add some color to it and fill the back of the emblem and make the resin smooth on the back, the chrome emblem would be cool with like a yellow, or a blue or even white filling. I tried to do it with some of the old toyota emblems I had, not to bad looking. good luck

Instead of coloring them, I've debadged everything, the hood, doors, and trunk, looks quite nice.
