Older motor's. Like the 4.7 truck motor has more hp than the 5.2 it replaced. The 2.0 4-banger Neon motor had 132 hp. And the older 2.5 4 banger had only 100 hp.

The horsepower numbers for the 3.3 may look surprisingly low compared to the 2.7, but if you look at the bottom end power, the 3.3's got a bunch, and you don't have to wind it out to get what it offers. Around town it feels quite peppy. And, the 3.3 has the advantage of (I believe) no timing belt to replace; a much cheaper, more reliable water pump; no sludge problem failures. The 3.3 don't get no respect but it deserves plenty.

When I bought my '96, my brother - a service writer at a large Dodge dealer - advised me to get the 3.3 instead of the 3.5 because the 3.3 was in his opinion a more reliable engine.

You gotta remember the 3.3L is an old school engine with push rods and an overhead valve valvetrain, tho a very rock solid and dependable engine the 2.7 does have 39 more horsepower.

The 2.7 is a modern design with dual overhead cams and 4 vavles per cylinder, allowing it to breath better and produce more power, but it has to revv to make the power.

I myself would like to see a drag race betwwen the 3.3 and 2.7 should be interesting, I bet the 3.3 whould take the hole shot but the 2.7 whoud probably run it down, just my opinion as I have never raced the two.

This reminds me when my dad and I went to a boat display at a museum and both laughed at a 12 liter engine with 65 horsepower. Believe it was 4 or 6 cylinders, inline, all copper/bronze colored metal, crazy parts all exposed and whatnot. The first VWs were around 60 hp and they should be in the 1.0-2.0 liter range.
