Do you ever have the dreaded sense that you are about to receive an @$$ raping? That's how I feel shopping around for a 2nd Gen tranny for my 95 Trep.

There's a shop, Rockville Used Auto Parts, that's really close to me and has several 99+ LH trannies in stock. I call and speek to the guy and tell him I have an 01 Trep(slight fib to maintain warrenty) and I'm looking for a 99+ tranny out of a 3.2/3.5 with as low miles as I can find for under $500. He keeps telling me about all these low mile trannies and I'll ask about the engine and he says... "2.7". I'm like I just said I don't want the 2.7. He tells me I'm miss informed about the final gear being different cause a program he "paid a lot of money for" is telling him they're all the same. I have a list of his trannies and keep asking him a 01 300M tranny with 49K listed for $450. Finally he tells me it's still in the car and he doesn't want to get it and keeps trying to sell me a 2.7 tranny. Finally he's like "you just want that one cause it's got only 49K on it". I'm like "yeah...". Then he has the balls to say, "So stop feeding me all this bullshit about final drive ratios". Then he states with attitude, "If you want that tranny bring me $500 and I'll pull it". I about lost it then! Basically told him to shove his POS tranny I'll take my money elsewhere.

It sucks cause that junk yard was much closer than any of the others listed on car-parts.com. But I'll be damned if I'm gonna be made to feel like I'm doing this junk monkey a favor by buying his tranny.

I subsequently found two other shops both with 101 day warrenty(vs. Rockville's 30 day) and more friendly sales people. The problem I face is this. The one shop is close to a buddies house and has:

99 Trep 3.5 Tranny with 50K for $450

This dude knew his stuff and confirmed that what I was saying about the final gear ratios was true. He said the first guy probably didn't look in the notes section where it states that while the part numbers are the same the final gear is different in the 2.7. He was smart and friendly, but his trans is older and higher mileage than what I was hoping. Plus is this tranny doesn't work, his warranty is more of a hastle cause he has no other similar backups. his lack of stock worries me a little.

Then I found another shop, equally far away. They have huge selection, but don't have flat rates for their parts, so LH trannies range from $450-850. I'm not spending 850 on a junk yard trans. Now this guy also told me that his computer said the 2.7 is the same as the others. I politiely said that I'm not doubting his software, but someone I trust told me otherwise so I'm gonna go with what my friend has said. Nuff said. From then on out no mention of the 2.7 trannies. Here's a few samples of what he has:

99 Trep 3.2 Tranny with 37K for $450
02 Corde 3.5 Tranny with 28K for $550(still in car)
99 Trep 3.2 Tranny with 27K for $550 (on shelf for 2 years)
00 LHS 3.5 Tranny with 26K for $600
00 Trep 3.2 Tranny with 20K for $600

So as you can tell he's pricer but has lower mileage trannies in stock. The Corde tranny seems like the best deal. An 02 isn't that old, and 28K seems like a reasonable amount of mileage for an 02. but it's still in the car. So I have to pay and then wait a few days for them to take it out. The same warranty, but they have the stock to just give me a new tranny if the first one is no good.

So that's where I'm at. What do you all think? Go with the shop with the nicer more knowledgeable sales guy or the shop with higher prices, better selection, but same misinformed software as the @$$holes in Rockville?

I'd prefer to go with the nice guy but since 'it don't work' go with the other one -- prolly that one from the 'Corde.

yeah I know what you mean by thoes idiots. That is the same issue for one of the guys that works at my local yard. I was looking for a premium BCM and he was telling me that the computers had to be used in the year it was put in or they would not work. I did not even bother arguing with him. The guy that actually runs the place is really cool though. He has some sence to listen and learn from other people.

There is a yard in Minnesota that sells them for about $200 WITH FREE SHIPPING. They are on ebay a lot.

There is NO reason on earth to avoid the 2.7 tranny. You can swap your existing gears into the other tranny in 20 minutes while they are out of the car.

Or you can buy new gears for under $100.

I"m just curious why you dont want the 2.7 with the taller gears? It will give you a bit more takeoff power.

I usually hate dealing with junkyards but the one near me knows me by name now. LOL

Exactly what I was going to say. The chain and gears from your 1G trans will slide right on. You have to take off the chain cover to swap the chain covers anyway. So it's not much more work.

I've found that the guys at local yards can sometimes be complete asses.

I just use car-part.com, and the major yards.

Local guys can be asses on the phone and the nicest people in person. Like my yards that I found 2 hours south of me. I called (Way back when I was doing my ATC mod) and asked for a IP Harness. They tried giving me the run-around about first that the LHS didn't have auto air, then tried telling me they couldn't pull it out, and they would have to pay someone 150 bucks to do it and sell it to me for 200.

Yah that didn't work.

A week later I show up out of the blue on a Saturday..the guy was nice as hell, just like "Yah we got an LHS back there. Go back and see if theres anything you want out of it."

Showed up 4 hours later with an IP harness, a set of visors, and a bunch of other ****...and the guys like "Ahh...how about 100 for the pile bud?"

I'm like..."ok!"

Better to deal with Junk yard people in person as opposed to on the phone. Just imagine how many phone calls they get a day. :rainfro:

Well the reason I don't want taller gears is I have two cars. The Trep is my beater and I need the best gas mileage possible. When I want acceleration, I take the Hawk out for a spin. :bigok:

Okay so my 1G gears are as strong and 100% compatable with the 2G tranny? Would I need any special tools to swap gears? Do I need any special knowledge to set the gears up? I know with my Hawk(RWD) setting up gears is a VERY exact science. Perhaps the LH's transaxle is more forgiving...

I need to make sure whatever I buy I can get in the Trep fixed in 2 days(4 tops). So if once I get her apart I realize that I need a special tool that has to be mail ordered, that would be very bad. I'd rather just get the proper gears from the get go, even if it costs me a little more. but if you all who have done this tell me, no it's simple and only takes a few extra minutes. Then sweet. You've increased my selection base. :)

Yeah it's kinda by Waldorf. It's about an hour - hour and a half north of me. (And I am 2 1/2 hrs south of Baltimore). My g/f got a good deal on her tail lights after her cavalier got whacked.

Junk yard people can be pricks, I had to show them this website and some others that say the 2.7 has a different gear ratio. I also had to show them the difference between an EVIC and OTIS. I would go with what you instincts tell you if you dont like the asshole dont go with him go with what you can afford and has the best warranty.

That works IF they allow you back where the wrecks are. More and more yards aren't allowing people to roam around on their own and remove parts themselves.........you tell the staff what you want, and THEY pull it. We have four or five yards around this area, and none that I know of allow customers back with the vehicles anymore.

1st gen gears are direct swap with teh 2nd gen gears..

and no.. unlike a rear end there is no pinion angles or spacers or **** to play with..

its just 2 gears and 2 chains.

About the gas mileage issue - I threw a tranny/torque converter from a 2000 2.7 into my '97, and actually noticed an improvement in mileage (went from low 16s to about 17.5 city). I think the higher stall speed from the SE torque converter puts less load on the engine, which kind of cancels the effect of the taller gears, or maybe just switching to a good transmission was enough to improve the mileage. Anyway, I wouldn't be too worried about fuel economy loss from a 2.7 tranny if you're going to use the 2.7 torque converter as well.

When you get the tranny I would be happy to swap the gears for you at no charge as long as both transmissions are out of the car.
