Hey guys:

I just replaced the radiator on my 99 Intrepid with a 2.7 Ltr. I let it idle for about 10-15 minute to circulate the new coolant and the engine started knocking loudly sort of under the intake between the heads. It is a factory rebuilt motor with about 50,000 miles on it with oil changed every 3,000 miles with Mobil 1. I was sort of thinking it was a emissions purge valve like the little Neons have that make that little clicking noise. I revved up the engine and the noise went away only to come back a minute or two later. This is the first time I have ever heard this noise and under normal driving conditions I have never heard it before. Any Ideas?

Not sure, you say knocking loudly then you say Little Clicking noise like the Neons.

Loud Knocking is really bad. New Radiator would not cause that eccept the oil cooler maybe washed something into the engine?????

I guess the evap purge solenoid is down to the left of the engine so it isn't that. The knock sensor is under the intake manifold. Could I have a bad knock sensor?

I think he means to check the oil for coolant, possible source of the knock.

No oil in the coolant. Car started and ran fine like it always does. Norman smooth idle, then a knocking noise, Revved it up and noise went away. Couple minutes later the same thing. During normal driving no problems. Only during extended idle, and to be honest with you this is the first time I have idled the car for an extended time.

this is what i would....i would drop the oil pan and winage tray and check the #2 rod.

i have been sucessful in doing a rod bearing replacement on a 2.7 with bad bearings...they weren't spunt but they were fatigued ... what i had was a very light knock on the #2 rod and replaced the bearing about 6 months ago and no problems as of today.

if it is spunt then it has done damage to the crank journal and rod and will require a regrounded crank

It doesn't really sound like a rod knock. Besides, the factory rebuilt engine only has 50,000 miles on it and I have faithfully changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles with synthetic oil. My wife has been driving the car to work everyday since and it hasn't made any noise. I tend to think it is a bad knock sensor. What puzzles me is that knock sensors usually malfunction under load (like going up a hill). This happened at idle speed.

i still think that a pan drop is in order to be on the safe side....doesn't really take that long to do.....Sometimes if you catch it in time you can save it.....when it in the begainning stage it won't sound like a knock until the bearing has gone completely...at idle you will notice it the most....as you rev it up it won't be as noticable.....just a thought!:D

You could have aggravated the bearings in the water pump by changing the coolant when you replaced the radiator. That is the only thing that is in the area that you say the noise is coming from. You can use a long extension or screwdriver to listen and pinpoint the noise, unless you have one of the mechanic stethoscopes. I couldn't imagine it being a rod knock or something major. Let me know what you find out.
