On my way home from work tonight, My engine light came on (stayed on) I turned of the air and radio to listen for anything unusual. She ran and sounded fine... She is an '02 sxt with 10,700 miles. WTF? Could this be a sensor? Does anyone know what it could be?

Its in the How to. I got check engine lights for stupid things like cylinder mis-fires

Check what code it is.. if its no big deal, then go into the engine bay and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for at least 20-30 seconds. That will reset the code. If the check engine light appears again later on, and shows the same code then there is something really wrong with your car

Okay I did the key cycle thing and it tells me code (P 0135). I dont see that code on the link you gave me...?

I found it...It says [02 sensor 1/1 heater ckt]
[Oxygen sensor 1/1 heater element malfunction]
Is this serious? Or do I just disconnect the battery and reset?

You can try what others have said and disconnect the battery, and see if the code reappears. The element that the code speaks of is actually INSIDE of the oxygen sensor. And sense the heater element is malfunctioning the PCM will not react to the sensor signal until the sensor reaches approx. 600 degrees F. This believe it or not makes or breaks your 02 sensor. BTW: You are using unleaded gas right?

I brought mine in for the same thing on Saturday. I have a 2002 SE. Instead of changing out the sensor, they said there was a TSB and they just had to update the computer software (TSB 18-031-02). No problems so far.

Yes Im using Unleaded gas... I dont really understand what you said but I'll let my husband read this, he should know what you'r talking about. Thanks for all the help!

I haven't seen a leaded gas pump around for years.. how could a person NOT be using unleaded? Drive deep down into mexico regularely??

We do have some LH's owners that are in the Gulf region, and over in Europe. Who knows what kind of gas is over there?

The heater element in a OBD 2 or 4-wire O2 sensor is used for nothing more than to get it a little bit hotter so the computer can acheive closed loop operation faster. PO135's are extremely common, as the heater elements frequently short internally. I would not recommend disconnecting the battery to clear DTC's. OBD 2 cars very sensitive to having adaptive strategy wiped out from the PCM. These cars also hardly ever set a false code, if it set there is a 99% chance there is a definate failure. It may be as simple as a PCM reflash, but still a failure.

If your knowledge of the car is limited your best bet would be taking to a technician you can trust. It is still under warranty after all, so rather than screw with it yourself, go get it fixed for free.

Thanks for all your help!
We disconnected the battery and the engine light has not returned. She is going to the dealer for an oil change tomorrow and I will have the mech test the comp then.

ok apparently my light just came on outa nowhere as well, the car runs just fine, same way it did b4 the light came on, since i dont have a digital odometer im guessing i cant get the codes out of it unless i take it to like autozone or something. if i disconnect the battery and reset it and that takes it off would that maybe fix it. im thinking now that it might get a battery disconnected code because right now theres a lot of corrosion on the terminal wires that i cant get out, and sometime has trouble starting. oh and my pcv hose has a rather large hole in it, would that set it off maybe to?and if i just slapped some electrical tape on it would that fix that problem if that were it? at least until i can get some stainless steel braided hoses.

You are kidding right? Just go out to your local auto parts store and buy a new PCV hose. If memory serves me right they are relatively cheap.

If the battery was messes up, the check engine light wouldn't come on. The battery light would come on.
