I don't think they really contribute to or prevent sludge. However sludge forms when oil is operated at too cold of a temperature.

The reason oil coolers are needed is to cool the moving parts in the engine.

Actually, sludge is formed from the oxidation of the oil molecules in the oil. Oxidation is much greater at higher temps. That's why you should change your oil ofter, because more will oxidize and make sludge. When you do alot of short trips, the oil never gets up to normal operation temp, so the condensation in the oil doesn't burn off. That when you get alot of foam in the oil.
