My home boy is a police officer and for there patrol cars they drive the new Impalas, the 03 Impalas and Intrepids. He said the intrepids have the best handling and that's the only thing he said good about it. He and his other officer buddy were clowning the treps how they shut off going in high speeds and that the acceleration is terrible. They said the treps be the last patrol cars chosen when a shift is coming on duty. That made me feel bad about owning an Intrepid. Also, I know an old guy that says his R/T motorsports trep fast as hell untill it hit 112 and shuts off. That's not suppose to happen is it?

It happens, the PCM/TCM is programmed that way. If I remember right, depending on the PCM and tires the car came out of the factory is basically what decides what your limit is... I didn't think the police edition Intrepids had limiters though?

He is talking about a guy he knows who has an R/T - not the police version

Hey flipflop - those impalas may have V8's in them don't they? That may be why they comment on the lack of acceleration of the intrepid? And when they are clowning on the Trep's, slap them in the nads-man up!!!

No the Impala's don't have V8's. The 2000-2005 Impala 9C1/3 had the Buick L36 3.8 Series II. It put out 200 hp and 240 ft/lbs. good for a mid seven second run to 60. The 2006-now 9C1/3 have the Chevrolet LZ9 3.9. Thats putting out about 240hp 240ft/lbs. There aren't any V8's in Impala Interceptors because GM did not want to design a new HD cooling system for the 5.3. The 3.9 in the interceptors use the cooling system from the civilian 5.3 though. The last "Impala" police car to use a V8 was the Caprice. The last gen. ran from 1991-1996. The standard engine was the 4.3 V8, even on police cruisers, but the 5.7 LT1 (VIN P) was an option that made it the fastest police car until the 5.7 Dodge Charger. Although gone, it is not forgotten.

An impala is a pushrod engine and it might feel like it is accilerating faster, where the 3.5 is a ohc engine that needs rpms to get the hp going.

Try a gen1 3.3 they seem quite quick off the line.

LOL... like you should care what some pig says, the engines were limited in some models only because they came off the production line with cheap ass tires...has nothing to do with the engine or vehicle capabilities...besides never feel bad about your ride when there are people still rollin' dirty old civics and beat up neons!

I'd take a Trep over an Impala any day and twice on Sundays. Cops here stopped using Impalas because they were junk and wouldn't take the abuse they were given. Trannys were falling out and brakes were getting replaced every couple of months

this thread dissapoints me... Your upset that you own an intrepid cause some guy said their a piece of ****? what a crock!

If you are gonna let these fellas tell you that all intrepids are ****, and change your mind completely about these cars then why the hell do you own one?

Maybe i'm just taking this the wrong way but hell i kinda find this offensive...

This doesn't make sense to me, the 3.5 V6 intrepid interceptor does 0-60 in 8 seconds, same as the crown vic interceptor with the 4.6 V8, plus the intrepid out handles the crown vics. Also, besides the brake fires, the intrepids are said to hold up better than the impalas

Ill add that they took care of the brake fires back in 03, it was the type of brake fluid that was used IIRC. With the size and weight of a Crown vic...intrepid should out handle that hands down.

Two large local police departments here got rid of all crown vics, and Impalas, and replaced them with 3.5 Chargers last year. That has to tell you something!

I love my trep but i would have to say i would trade it for a late model impala SS with the 5.3 liter v-8 rated at 303hp. 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and top speed of 154 mph !!
