I've recently heard a rumor generally about fuel that starting a car requires as much fuel as if you let your car idle for 20 min? so theoretically if i'm going in/out of a place it would be cheaper to leave the car running rather than turn it off? Anyone have any input on this? thanks!

I call BS on this. I think I once heard that starting the car uses about the same amount of fuel for idling for about 10 seconds (well, somewhere between 10 and 30 seconds, I don't remember the number, but I know it's less that a minute).

There have been studies done on this concept, with regard to environmental concerns. They recomment shutting an engine off if the car sits for 1 minute or more.
Modern fuel injected cars start quickly with the equivalent of a fast idle volume of fuel, so that rumor is bunk.

20min, no way. 20 seconds... MAYBE.
