Going to work to day. About 6:15 am on hwy 252 north. Stop at the light at 85th ave. The light turns green in my mirror i see a truck coming up very fast behind me. So i step on it hard so he does hit me in the ass. At about 65 i take my foot of the gas the car keeps going at 95mph i start stomping on the gas pedal hard. The 4th time it stops. Now i am doing 105 mph not funny feeling. I pull into the shoulder and stop. I check and make sure the foor mat was not caught under the gas pedal. Not caught i raise the hood and check the TBI cable was not hung up it moved fine. I get back into the car and keep going to work. I get off on to Hwy 10 north there is a SEMI ahead of me going slow so i get into the for left lane and step on it dam it does it again. I turned the lights on inside and can see the gas pedal going down by its self. At stomp on it a couple of times it wont slow down. So i turn the key off at 90 mph. At 55 mph i turn the key back on and start the car again. No problems the rest the way to work. The car was well warmed up had been running for about 25 min before the gas pedal stuck. It did this last winter about 4 times only when it is below -0 out. If it is warmer it does`nt do it. I took it in twice last year and they could not find any thing wrong. I called Brookdale Dodge today after work they said they have never heard of this problem before. They had no idea`s what to do. Has any body else have this problem? I love the car but dam it scare`s the **** out of you when it does it.

Dodge Intrepid's have been known to accelerate all of a sudden full throttle. It's never happened to me although one time when I romped on it in my 1999 ES 3.2L my engine screamed like a freakin beast and the damn thing took off faster than it ever had before. It scared the shhhht out me and I never got it to do it again. Chrysler has researched the issue and has never been able to duplicate the problem. Chrysler states that this is not an issue with their vehicles. If you look at the NHTSA consumer complaints you'll notice that there are like 6 complaints in regard to this.

I thought one complaint was a little funny cause the guy thought that if he turned on the heat or something that it would fix the problem.

This is probably your Input/Output Speed Sensor or your Throttlebody needs cleaning.

I have heard of some cases where it had never occured again after the I/O SS was replaced and then I have heard of some where it had continued.

Have the dealer also lube your accelerator pedal pivots or do it yourself. I think you can use Mopar Multipurpose lubracant. NEVER use WD-40, not saying you would.

That is not cool at all, I hope you get it corrected or get the dealer to correct it. If your dealer isn't helping you much try taking it somewhere else.

Although Chrysler Corporation claims supposedly the brakes will outpower the vehicle's engine from a stop in this condition, YES KILL THE IGNITION!

Later, good luck!

Be careful on the way to the meet. ;)

Seriously, having your throttle stuck open is way scary. Hope you get it figured out. Did you wash the car recently? Get something wet? Having your pedal go down on it's own sounds like the cruise control, but I don't know what could be making it act up.

Again, that's not cool!

Hope you guys get that straightened out!

Remember, process of elimination......

1. Lube or have your accelerator pivots lubed

2. Check your throttle linkages and apply some throttlebody cleaner and lubracant in the appropriate locations.

3. Remember, could be Input/Output Speed Sensor.

4. Yes, could be cruise control going crazy, I wouldn't know why though....?

I'd have it looked at immediately and make a report to the NHTSA since this is a safety issue.

Good Luck! Keep us posted guys...!

I called the 1 800 for Chrysler. The lady check and found no recalls. She did send a E- mail to the service Manger at Brookdale Dodge. He and she would get a back to me Tuesday. To see what they can do. I washed the car Saturday morning. Ran around all day Sat and Sun no problems. Of course it well be 30 to 35 Deg`s the rest of the week so the car well not act up to warm outside. The only thing that scare`s me if the gas sticks and i have a wreck. I dont want to hurt anybody else or my wife or son. I will not let the wife drive the car if it gets cold out any more.

Speed sensor, Cruise all sound like good places to start to me....only happens in cold weather? Huummmm, in the old carb days I would check for ice on the linkage, but one would think once the motor heated up any ice would be melted...gotta be an electronic problem.

The cruise control is the ONLY THING in the engine that can move the throttle plates (other than the gas petal). The IAC valve does all the adjusting for idling.

Check to see if the cruise control connection is corroded or damaged, something where a cold day might change the properties of it... something strange like that.

Also, do the second gen 'treps have the little cruise control indicator light on the instrument panel like the first gens do?
if you had the cruise ON, maybe the "resume/accelerate" button on the steering wheel is shorting out, or maybe the cruise control connection in the steering column is worn/damaged.......

It's a tough call whether or not this problem is related to cruise control. I don't know about the second gen, but the first gen kills the cruise control at 80. Now on the other hand I know Ford had a huge controversy over this same issue with the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis. Turns out it was part of their cruise control mechanism that under certain, extremely unlikely situations the gas would get stuck at full throttle. I saw something on Nightline or 20/20 where they figured out that it took something like 10 or 11 things to go wrong at the same time in order for this to happen. It's probably a similar situation with the Chrysler. Of course Ford denied that the problem existed, I hate to say it, but Chrysler might be doing the same thing, I'm sure they don't want or need more bad publicity. Probably a lot scarier with a large, powerful V8.

Sure you don't have an Audi? :)

Actually I had the same problem in my Renault. It ended up being that the accelerator pedal had worn a hole in the floormat and got stuck every so often in the mat. It took some clever diagnosis to figure that one out! :)

Good Luck!

if you had the cruise ON.
The cruise can be on without the light on, it only comes on when you push the set or resume buttons.

do both your brake/turn signals work? I've heard that if any of these do not work(i.e. bulb blown) that the criuse control will not work (on most newer cars anyways)this may not have anything to do with YOUR problems since the cruise will not shut off or comes on on it's own or whatever-just an off-subject remark, really.
This is definately a real safety issue-PLEASE be careful when 'flooring it' and always keep in mind a 'way out'.give yourself more room than usual to react
Hope you get this fixed
