don't all of us first have to step on the brake first before putting the car in gear? Is there somekind of locking mechanism that is connected to the brake and gear shift lever? If so , mine broke!!!!!!!!!!
My little baby put the car in gear yesterday w/o keys or anything. Luckily the car did not go anywhere. Does anyone know of this problem. If so, ow can it be fixed?

Mine is the column shift (old person shifter) and when it is in park and keys out it will not come out of gear, but when started or keys in the "on" position I can shift without pressing the brake. So it sounds like something isn't right, for yours to do that. I would guess there is a pin or latch that has broken or wornout. If I had a service manual I would look it up for you but I don't, sorry.

we had a discussion about this way back in the day, apparently there's no safety mechanism built in like other cars have. it's nothing out of the ordinary.

i just reread your post and saw the last line...now THAT is out of the ordinary. i'd take it to the dealer and let them take a look.

Mine is like that too. I took the console apart, and found that someone took the locking mechinisim off (the people before me) I tried putting it back together, but it would require a little adjusting of the tranny cable, so I said screw it, and left it.

Heh...mine has done that from day one :)

Ive learned to live with it. My car was stolen once before i got it, and I have a feeling the interlock was broken and never fixed.

The car does have an electrical safety switch that keeps you from starting it in anything but Park or Neutral.

Well if this unlocking problem is more of a pain in the butt than it is a major safety issue, I guess I just have to live with it. Compared to the OTHER problems that this car has right now, I guess this is very minor??? :(
