Goodyear Rolls Out "Quiet" Eagles

PHOENIX — When Goodyear surveyed owners of Cadillacs, BMWs and Audis last year, the Akron-based tire manufacturer found it could win some customers by simply keeping quiet.

Turns out when consumers buy performance tires, they get improved handling but typically sacrifice a quiet ride. Those potentially disgruntled drivers should be intrigued by Goodyear's latest creation, a high-performance Eagle tire with what Goodyear calls "ResponsEdge" technology.

This tire blends two unusual ingredients: carbon fiber and Kevlar, the material used to make bulletproof vests. The Kevlar helps to cut down on noise and vibration, while the carbon fiber adds stiffness for improved handling, so you get the best of both worlds, according to Goodyear.

There's also a built-in "rim protector," a little rubber lip that hits the curb first and helps to keep your fancy wheels from getting scratched up.

Initially available in May in 24 sizes to fit most popular high-performance touring sedans, and priced from $100 to $210 each, the new Eagle is targeted at drivers who want crisp, responsive handling and a smooth, comfortable ride. This segment includes vehicles such as BMW, Audi, Lexus, Acura, and Cadillac as well as Mazda and Scion.

Goodyear is offering buyers a 30-day, no-obligation trial, along with roadside assistance. The company says a run-flat version of this tire is in the pipeline, and it will eventually be offered as a factory-installed option, not just as a replacement tire.

What this means to you: Quiet is good. We'll see if this technology takes hold in the market.
