Hello. I got my car detailed "professionally" cuz it's been raining and I can't seem to find time to do it my self. This place is convenient, as it's across from my work but it seems kinda run down. Figured I'd give it a shot cuz he gave me dealer price of $85, rather than the $116 they normallyl charge for full detail (trunk, engine, interior, body).

It was rainy and dark so I didn't see it initially, but there are several surface scuff marks on the body he didn't get out. These could've easily been rubbed out. And some areas where there's still unremoved wax in crvices as well as flat surfaces!!

Also, in the interior, there are corner areas in plastic where you could see dust where he didn't take the time to clean out (like the corner molding behind the parking brake lever).

He did do a good job gooping stuff on the engine to make it shine... also the trunk looks good (but it's just the trunk).

First time for a "professional" job.... is this what I should expect? I think this is stuff he should've taken car of. The lighting didn't seem to be adequate in the shop (mostly daylight with the garage door open, but it was raining, so it was kinda dark). What about door jambs?... shouldn't those be wiped clean??

Or am I just being anal?

I don't think you're being anal. I would have expected more for that price. (Although I know some detailing can be more..)

I had some body work done on my car recently, and they wash and wax....... They left some wax on the car, but I can't expect too much... since the washing and waxing was free...

It is hit or miss with professional detailers(mostly miss)....and it looks like you missed. Personally I would write it off as a poor business and would no longer give them any of my business. I wouldn't even bother taking the car back to point out the problems...if they can't do it right the first time they are likely never to get it right and a very poor detailer can mess up a car. The condition of the shop should have given you a good idea of what kind of job they would do...if you can't see it you can't clean it.

I don't think anything you mentioned are things you should not expect to get done. Maybe a little dust in the interior can be expected to be missed but there is no excuse for missing door jams and leaving wax.

$85 is a pretty cheap price for a bumper to bumper pro detail...I would say you got what you paid for.

I'm with Chicago here. It's very hit and miss with detailers. I took my car to one and got it back with the strangest mix of detailing and sloppiness. For example the wheel wells weren't even washed, but the door jambs were washed, waxed and the door boots dressed. The leather seats were shampoo'd, nicely dressed to a brand new low luster shine and the carpet was spotless. But the windows had finger prints and interior dressing overspray all over them and the cup holders looked like they had poured thier Cokes in them. To top it all off the paint was clean and smooth as glass, but it was full of swirls and buffer marks. I took the car back and complained, the owner/manager said they'd fix it at my convenienced and apologized for the sloppy work. The problem was wen I did take it back, it was returned in about the same condition so I gave up. I spent $125 on it and the shop was immaculate. I really had high hopes after talking with the owner for 30 minutes on the phone before bringing the car in the first time. Unfortunately, "Details" just didn't live up to their name... :(

From a woman’s perspective, when I have taken my car back, it seems like they do something else "stupid" that you won't see until later (unless you came back and acted like a fool, but your concerns don't seem like one of those cases). I've heard of these issues from my male friends as well.

If it's a small shop, it's possible that you will get the same people/person who worked on it before and you still won't be satisfied.

I wouldn't go back and would inform my friends to stay away from them too. I find that referrals from friends are good for finding the best place to go. Often, convenience isn't as convenient as it seems.

Not for nothing... thats why I wouldn't pay more than $35 buks. Around my way... for $35 buks U get the "exterior" detail which is a handwax and buff/shine. I never tried getting a combo where they do the interior as well. I'd rather do the interior myself.

Out in Long Island, I even found a place that will do the same thing for $25 buks... and they have done a better job to date than any other detail place ive been to. Ill be giving them repeat business for sure.

I think you have to at least give them a chance to fix it...maybe they had a rook doing it and the boss didn't check it....then if they don't fix it then open your mouth and sing..(you could always threaten to go to the news.....maybe you'll catch a reporter on a slow news day......Could be a DATELINE specail......The shotty detail!!!

The wax sometimes is hard to get out of someplaces, around door handles, lettering, but you can sometimes get that out by using an air compressor hose. The scuffs sometimes can be buffed out but it depends how deep the scuff his. One other thing did he use detailing clay? The clay gets out any dirt that gets embedded into the paints surface. If it has you should be able to take a rag and see if it glides across the surface of your hood...if it doesnt it hasnt been done.

My buddy works at a detailing shop, they are so anal about doing everything nice and neat like in cars with large floors or vans etc they vacuum the carpets like they cut the grass of a baseball Field (one line in one direction, one in the other).

The best way is with a soft bristled toothbrush and Qtips... ;)

thanks to all for the feedback. i agree that i got what i paid for. if i had payed $116 (instead of $85) i would have been real upset. but the car does look better. i think i will go back up there and point these things out in a constructive manner and see what he says. if he doesn't want to fix it, i will just go somewhere else and see how they do next time..
thanks again.

Sounds like a crappy shop. The running rate around here for a good job is $200-300. To do a good job takes more than a couple of hours. Good shops also carry good insurance! I took a car in once and they returned it clean, but the carpet was wet for days and they buffed through the clear coat on my hood! They ended up paying to repaint my hood. The key is to find someone who truly has pride in their work. In a similar vain - good body shops are very hard to find. I'm extremely anal about body work!

that's a good idea. thanks.

i just went back to that shop yesterday and talked to the buffer guy there. apparently the guy that did my car last week got fired for doing some "funny" stuff... don't know. this new guy said that it doesn't even looked buffed! so the owner decided to redo it. i'm glad because i've got friends... just better business practice.

so i dropped off the car in the morning and picked it up during lunch and the car looks great!! took out all the little surface scratches and blemishes and blended some scratches in on the bumper.

so anyway... just an update. thanks for the feedback.

Great to see the shop took responsibility for the previous lack of service.

For me if you serve me right the first time, you've got me for life and if not you will never see me again... ever :unhappy:
