Anyone know what might cause a growling sound -- sort of a deep rattle -- on a '98 ES? It's particularly noticable when on cold start and reduces somewhat as the engine warms up. This has been going on forever so surely there's a TSB about it?

Thanks

not uncommon in LH engines. the oil drains slowly backwards when the engine isn't on and the loud knocking goes away as soon as all the nooks and crannies get filled up with oil again. if it lasts more than 5-10 seconds it's worth more investigation, otherwise i wouldn't worry about it.

This is not a bearing rattle or lifter tap --I believe there's some clearance issue somewhere. It was doing it when new but I (regrettably) disregarded it since it wasn't all that noticeable to anyone except me. I would hope that if my oil filter has a decent anti-drainback valve that oil wouldn't drain back very readily. Anywhow, just wondered if there might be a TSB on it.

Marcus, I think there is TSB, has something to do with a chain or something. It's nothing to worry about though, I'm pretty sure every single second gen 3.2/3.5L engine makes that sound. I kinda like it myself.
