OK, trying to keep this as short and sweet as possible. After realizing my car battery had lived it's last day, I was eager to change it out last night.

So, first off, I took out the Air filter box and noticed the positive cable was quite corroted. I also soon found out this was a factory battery, finally giving after 5 long years....long live Mopar batteries!

I attempted to try to lightly bump the connector loose with a wrench, to no avail, I could not loosen either the connector nor the nut on the bolt. So, I said "forget this," and decided I would just have Sears do it. I re-installed the air filter box, and opened the car door only to have no power at all now....

Now I'm getting frustrated. So I once again remove the filter housing, jack up the car, remove the tire, and tug out the battery a bit. At this, the positive cable comes loose ad pops off. I'm thinking good deal, now I'll just go buy my new one install it, life will be good.

So, I get my Die Hard Gold battery and a cleaner/maintenance kit. OK, I don't mind spending $80 for a battery with a 3 year warrenty, but what happens later irks me. So I get home, clean the positive cable, only to see a crack both at where the positive wire and jump start wires meet as well as around the connector. Now I am screwged. I tried just resetting the cable and squeezing it on with pliers. The negative cable the whole time is good as new, not even having a protective rubber cover on it, unlike my positive.

So, I'm all happy as the horn chirps and I think I have power. Once again, go to open the door, no mo-jo!!!! WTF! Now, I'm not only pissed off, hungry (9:30p) and a wee bit chilled in our balmy 4 degree winter night, I can't start my car!

I realized I would need to get this 'special double wire cable' from the dealer. So, with only one resort left, I remove the filter box, put back on the positive cable, clamp it down with a pair of Vise-Grips, and throw the filter box in the back seat.

On to this morning, I drop the car off for 'emergency' maintenance, only to have the guy ask why I just didn't get a new cable on splice a new neck on myself, to which my reply was, this cable is a two part, one of which feeds the power and one that jumps up to the bumper for jump starts, to which he then understands, it's a Dodge Intrepid, that dumb engineering of putting a battery right in front of the fender well and under the air filter box.

So, in just under 20 minutes, I am set to go with a new cable, running me $114 frippin' bux! WTF! Highway robbery! C'mon now! So needless to say, it has been a bad 24 hours and I am piss poor broke!

Heh, I've said it before. It was a terrible idea to locate the battery there. And no to mention the hose job you got on the battery itself. I paid $50 bucks for mine with a 4 year warrenty. If it fails for any reason, I take it back and get a brand new one. I had the same with my old car and they incorrectly installed it once, got a new one, and proceeded to fry out the second with my stereo. But I got 2 new ones with no questions asked. Not a bad battery either.

that sucks. sorry 2nd generation owners. i wonder who thought that one up? whats the deal with a seperate wire for jumpstarting?

Yeah, its the same for the 'Cordes, I've seen em. Chrysler had a good thing going with the 1st gens, everything is nice and available. In the 2nd gens, there's just no room under the hood, and WHY did they move the battery way back there.....

Try the Buick Lesabre, when my great uncle was in the hospital, the battery in his 00 Lesabre went. His son spent three days looking for the battery with no avail (couldnt find the owners manual). Turns out it was mounted under the rear seat

Alot of newer cars tuck the battery away and just have a small terminal mounted in the engine bay used incase the car needs to be jump started.

You should have done what I did and got yourself an Optima dry cell battery for a little more money. Then, put some anti-corrosive material on both terminals. Then walk away.

Hey my second car has 2 batteries at $110 a piece for original style. So your price wasn't that bad. Can you say battery relocated to the trunk and $35 Wally world special? (Car never is started between October and April so cold crank is no bother.

I just replaced my f'in battery. 6 years old and amps drawing it dry sometimes.. I think that was good :) now got a 900 Cold cranking amp battery in there.. seems to start up well in the cold.

Oh yea.. and if you ever have the chance to change a battery when it is -7F in the middle of a parking lot.... just don't do it. find yourself a friend with a garage.

Oh.. and about this Optima Dry Cell battery.. what/where/when/why? info? Links?

Just wait till the new LX cars come out in Jan 04 . The battery is in the trunk, guess DC heard all the bitching LOL .

Personally, I moved my battery to the trunk (for Ram air), but there is a much easier way to access the battery:

In park (of course), turn your steering wheel all the way to the left. in the right front wheel well,towards the front, you will find a set of screws. remove these and then remocew the panel. This is the battery access door.

From here you can remove the battery, change wires, clean the posts.. whenever you want.

I hope this helps (and I hope this doesn't sound sarcastic, I've had a few shots... the Avalanche game of course [see previous hockey related posts to see some of my "rituals"]),

the way we remove the battery at the plant is to just take off the air breather ( no screws just pulls out) and lift the battery up off the tray. We never take the battery out of the wheel area to much trouble .
