Hi guys,
My idiot neighbor crashed my 97 3.3 intrepid (200,000 miles), and I have rebuilt the entire cooling system and had all sorts of problems along the way. Now, when the engine is hot, there is a really hard shift from first to second gear. Second to third is fine, and it never happens when the engine is cold. Fluid level is good (ATF+4) and I put in a new radiator and an oversized Hayden cooler. He is being enigmatic about the exact circumstance of the crash, but I think it was run for a little while with low transmission fluid (judging by the amount sprayed around inside the engine compartment) and may have slightly overheated, but not enough to blow the head gasket. I went through 2 faulty thermostats from autozone and finally said to hell with it and am running without a thermostat. Any ideas? Is she on the way out? I haven't driven her more than 5 miles at a time because I don't want to hurt her. Any ideas?

Any chance you can find a shop with a DRBIII scan tool? They can perform a "Quick-learn" procedure that resets the base clutch volumes for all the internal pistons in the transmission.

Oh my goodness things just went south quickly. It is really rough downshifting and having trouble being put in reverse. Is my baby dead? I've gotten 5 years and 100,000 miles out of her for 2000$....but she's my toolbox. This is sad.

I don't know what to do. That car was incredible. No problem idling in cape cod traffic, but at the same time she was a beast zipping around boston. I just saw 2 other first gen intrepids in a chop shop down the street, and they seem to be everywhere on the cape, so maybe I'll swap all the newer parts out into one of these? It's incredible how long these cars last. I've gotten a lot of advice off this message board the last few years but never really posted because I was never stuck...but here I am, wicked bummed.

Is it worth it to get a used tranny? I could get a buddy of mine up here to help with the install but he would be pissed. I got ~200,000 miles on the engine, but have replaced all bushings, brake lines, brakes, bearings, and basically everything except the engine and transmission. I was gonna do struts and strut mounts next because they are shot but now...
