I'm too mad to use the search button!

Tonight I went out of town (25 miles away) When I got to the movie (Santa Clause 3: Escape Clause) I tired turning off the headlights like I would any other time when its dark and the headlights wouldnt go off. Hmm turned it back on and back off like I have to do in my moms van somtimes and it went off by me hitting the high beams. So now when I turn my headlights on with the switch they dont come on, only the corners turn on. So after switching out the black box since I had an extra sitting around and nope its not that. The only way my headlights will turn on is if I hit the high beams on and off about 20 times then the headlights will come on (no matter what the black box is if its on or off.) WERID!!!!!

I did however smell somthing and didnt know what that was.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's your multi-function switch (Turn signal,wiper,and highbeam switch). I think just about all of us here have had that same related problem with the headlights, and that switch.

You are going to have to get a replacement. New, or if you risk it, from a salvage yard.

Here's how to replace it:

Combination Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

These vehicles use a multi-function switch (also called a combination switch) to control a variety of tasks. This switch contains the electrical circuitry for the turn signals, the hazard warning switch, headlamp beam select switch, headlamp optical horn, windshield wiper switch, pulse wipe and windshield washer switching.

This integrated switch assembly is mounted to the left side of the steering column. Should any function of the switch fail, the entire switch assembly must be replaced.

Disconnect negative battery cable.

Tilt the steering column up and remove six screws holding the lower column shroud.

Tilt the steering column down and remove the upper column shroud.

Tilt the column up and remove the tilt lever.

Using a flat bladed tool in place of the lever, tilt the column down.

Remove the two mounting screws on the switch, then remove the switch from the column, disconnecting the two electrical wiring harness.

To install:

Install the switch to the column and secure using the mounting screws. Tighten the combination switch-to-column mounting screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).

Install the upper and the lower steering column shrouds tightening the retainers to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).

Install the tilt lever.

Connect the negative battery cable. Check all functions of the combination switch.

Yes it did, but I took my sisters kids and my girl with me and they all wanted to see it. So I pretty much just sat there texting on my phone :)

are you sure this is whats wrong?

(that sounds like alot of work, anyone have one of these they dont want or how much does it cost new?)

I'm for sure that's what's wrong. But if someone else has any other ideas ?

It's really easy to replace, all you are doing is taking the shroud off the steering column, and taking two wiring harnesses off and acouple of screws that hold the switch on. A new switch will run for $145 MSRP at the dealer.

I'm sure I dont want to spend that much lol. Everyones parting out their car so maybe I can bum or buy a cheap switch from them.

LoL, they are alot of money, Napa, has them for $109. It's alittle cheaper. The problem with those switches is they are running way to much power though the M/F Switch. With the headlights and fogs on that switch just get's to hot, and over time the contact's just burn up. If you run with your fogs on alot, that eat's them up faster.

Didnt know that, once I get it fixed I'm not going to run my fogs alot. Thank you for the help. I will see if I can get a couple from somone parting out their trep.

17inch lbs - thats a torx wrench correct? What if I dont have one of those is it that important?

For something like that, I never worry about inch lbs. I just tighten it hand tight. It's just for the plastic around the steering column.

i'd suggest buying one

on a first gen you need a t-3 socket.. i've replaced mine.. its simple.. one from either generations will work.. the local pick and pull charges like 12 bucks for em.. If i go tomorrow i'll grab ya one

ok, I dont really make it to the yard in this town. Me and the owner had a fight last time I was out there. I just hope that this is what is wrong with it.

(This is why I LOVE DI.NET, I bet if I took this to the local dealership or shop they wouldnt know what is wrong with it and would prolly end up making it worse.)
