Hi all,

Just found this forum today. I have been having probs w/ my 01 Intrepid ES 73,500 Miles.

Back in July I overheated. Temp guage was at less than 1/2 but low and behold i got a rush of steam. The housing that has the bleed port on it cracked. Had a it repaired in a garage, had the coolant sensor replcaced. Since then I have to leave the coolant sensor unpluged. so the fan runs all the time or the car overheats again. I changed the coolant sensor again but to no avail it gets hot and runs like crap yet the fans will not come on prior to overheating. If I run the a/c the fans will come on in High speed I never see them come on in low speed. I had the cooling system flushed and replaced the coolant. I checked the Fan relays both hi and ;lo they seem ok I dont know what to do next. My pockets are rather shallow right now and I really can't afford a trip to the dealer... Help!!

Have you bothered to replace the thermostat yet?

If you haven't had a check engine light come on yet, that means that its nothing electronical most of the time. If the coolant temp sensor or the fans were bad you would have seen a check engine light.

Sounds to me like either your thermostat is bad, or your water pump might be going out.

Have you experienced any coolant leaking near the water pump?
Do you flush the coolant system after you put in new coolant?

Those are some good places to start. Good luck.

thank you all for your reply.

1) When it overheats i do get a check engine light the codes read for overvoltage to the coolant sensor and intermittent loss of crank sensor but as soon as i let the car cool down the mil clears.

2)I mentioned in my previous post that I had flushed the cooling system. to be a bit more detailed I whent to the local quicky lube and they used a pneumatic system to flush and refill. actually it was pretty cool, the pump sucked the coolant out thru the coolant resivoir and then pumped new coolant in the same way. we did this three times until the coolant was clean on recovery. and yes the coolant was really dirty. I also made sure the system was bled after i took the ride home.

3) I believe the thermostat is good and the heater core is clear only because i get good hot steady discharge from the heater at idle and while running.

Now for the water pump. If it were bad would the car overheat with both the fans on or off?

The thing that befuddles me is that the coolant senor circuit doesnt seem to turn the fans on in time. if you recall in my post i said that when i dissconnect the sensor wire the fan runs constantly in hi speed. and the car does not overheat as long as i leave it like this. when the sensor is connected the guage in the dash never goes above 1/2 and the fans never come on in time to prevent overheating. I think perhaps it might be some prob with the pcm. but how do i check it? or how do i reflash/ update the pcm without paying the equivalant of my left nut to the dealer??

thanx again

would a coolant system leak down test rule out pressure issues (pump leaking, cap bad)
