I currently run dino in my '02 2.7 and change roughly 3 mos/3,000 mi, with no noticeable sludge with a peek through the oil fill cap (not necessarily no sludge at all). As far as mileage goes, I'll hit 97,000 miles tomorrow.

I am planning on changing to synthetic and was wondering if anyone has had any problems with the 2.7 and high interval synthetics, such as Amsoil ASL (5-30) or ATM (10-30).

My next change is due in June and my plan is to switch to synthetic then and ease into the high interval by doing the following:

June - Switch
End of August or 3,000 miles - Change
End of February '09 or 6,000 miles - Change
June '09 or 3,000 miles - Switch to high interval (only 3 months b/c I want to do the changes during warm months). At this time I'd also put in the Amsoil EAO42 (high interval filter) or equivalent.

This period will allow for the synthetic to clean some of the deposits away and minimize the remaining dino.

If you do a search you'll see people who have done this. They did a UOA (used oil analysis) to show which oil performed the best. I believe the best two were Amsoil and Mobil 1 HM.
I personnally would not go past 5,000 on synthetic in a 2.7.

I would not go past 3000 miles on a 2.7 between oil changes, even with full synthetic. They are very sensitive.

I've never been a fan of extended oil changes, even when the oil companies say you can go X number of miles. In my other cars I have always gone 5000 miles between changes with synthetic oil (even did 5000 on my old Intrepid with dino oil). But the only real way to know if your oil is still doing its job at X number of miles is to get an oil analysis. If the results say the oil is still holding up well at 3000 miles then go for 4000 miles the next time and analyze again. Now that I have a 2.7 that is the path I'll probably be following and the only way I would feel really confident.

Right, the only way to know is to test it, and the test can only tell you when you have gone too far.

Unless you test it, if you are running a 2.7, make it 3K miles. Whether running conventional or sythetic. If I still had a 2.7, I would use a good brand of synthetic oil and make it 3K between changes.

lol... I've been babying my 2.7. I've been changing mine every 1500 miles with Mobil 1 HM. I just paid a large chunk for a new clean engine and I plan to keep it running the best I can keep it for as long as possible.

Ok, you have an '04 and your changing your oil every 1500 miles?
I'm sorry but thats just plain stupid.

Stupid maybe, but it runs like a new one and the original engine that was in it died from sludge. The 2004 2.7 was NO better than any of them. They just had a different valve cover design.

I always do the extended change on mine. Just rolled over to 94k today and I just started driving 900 miles/wk. I did a filter change + topoff at about 4k, then a complete change 4k miles after that. Started with Mobil 1 for the first 50k miles, then went to Wal-Mart brand syn. No problems with either. Right now, no sludge, no ticks on startup, and still runs smooth as new. Now that I'm driving a lot I'm gonna up it to about 6k for filter change, then another 6k for a complete change. If the oil starts looking bad or the engine starts sounding different, I'll change my ways. Otherwise I'm not wasting my time or money. I plan on killing this car over the next 2 years so I'll let you know how long it lasts. I'm fairly confident things will be ok.

Why do you even care when the other guy changes his oil? It's what he is doing with his car, time and money. More power to him. You don't do it that way, fine. It's not like he is talking about coming around to your house and making you change your oil at any interval other than that which you deem necessary, so what is the big deal? Why do you need to bring in reinforcements? Is it really all that big of an ideological conflict to you?

I just completed a 7000 mile run on Amsoil TSO and I had a UOA done on it. The wear numbers were all excellent but I was surpised at low the TBN was after just 7K miles. Maybe it was just the lab I used and another lab would have reported a higher, more realistic number. But in general, the 2.7 is pretty hard on oil and you can not run the extended oil drain intervals that are advertised. For example the 17,500 mile or 25,000 mile drain intervals that Amsoil advertises, are not going to happen in a 2.7.

Consider Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W30 and go 6K-7K miles max.

What is a TBN? And where can you have your oil analyzed?

With Mobil1 oil? You know I do. It's a waste of $$$$$.

Thas cool. lol... I was at wally-world the other day, and low-and-behold, they sell OEM mopar filters and transmission fluids. Well, I picked the mopar oil filter and some Mobil1 oil but while I was perusing the various filters I saw a new one by Fram. It was made for high mileage engines and it has an additive that dissolves into the oil as the oil passes through it to reduce wear and tear and engine corrosion/deposits. Is this just bologna or what? Here's the link...

Fram are basicly the worst oil filters that you can buy. I have read 3 different oil filter tests and they all say Fram are terrible. The idea of the insert dissolving scares me personally. If you think about it, the insert is going to turn more into a gooey gel and could very easily block an oil passage. IIRC, Fram made a filter that was supposed to unleash "particles" into your engine to make it run better, and someone said, "What if I don't want particles in my engine?"
