So my 2000 Intrepid w/ 2.7L overheated out of nowhere and now everything is all messed up. While I was driving, I noticed the temp gage in the red zone so I pulled over and called a tow truck. when I got back home the car was dead from my hazards being on and the battery wouldn't charge. I replaced the battery and the car still wouldn't start so I replaced the starter. The car turns on but it shuts off after 5 seconds. While it's on for the short amount of time, it makes a really loud noise. It sounds like a lot of air intake and sounds like something is rubbing? I can't get anyone to diagnose it because it doesn't stay on long enough.

Does anyone have any suggestions or know what might be causing it to make that noise then shut off?

I'm betting your timing chain and water pump took a dump. It's a very common problem with the sludgeing up of the timing area. Pull the covers and have alook. Also welcome to the site! There is alot of info on here about the 2.7 problems. Alot of member just replace the 2.7 with a 3.5.

overheating is definitely a cooling system problem.
Anything else you notice? Check the fluids - was the coolant expansion tank full?
pull your oil dipstick - is the level correct and does the oil look normal? any coolant contamination?
How many miles on the engine and has it been rebuilt or worked on recently?

Spun bearing or bearings.Your oil is contaminated.Do you have any oil pressure_.Basaically..you fried the motor.end of story...

Doubtful, a spun bearing isn't gonna cause the engine to shut off after 5 seconds..

My guess is the timing chain, which you've probably bent valves or are getting close to it, so quit starting it, pull the front cover off and check it out. Stop by autozone pick up a repair manual for it.

While severe overheating is generally just a cooling system issue...The cooling system on the 2.7 is intertwined with the valve timing system via the internal timing chain driven water pump...

First check for stored codes(looking for cam, crank and misfire codes),
To check codes turn key from off to run 3 times quickly stopping in the run position on the 3rd turn..Odometer display will show stored codes and then "done"..write them down...you should at least have one stored code since you replaced the bat.

then check coolant level and oil level...Look carefully for signs of coolant in oil or what looks like overfilled with oil..Don't keep trying to start it and force it to try to run, if it is timing issue you can cause further expensive damage...

Some likely possibilities based on your description of sucking air, loud rubbing noise 5 second shutdown are:

water pump failure cause overheating and timing issues

timing issues cause cam and crank signal not to match = engine shuts down after 5 sec.

Coolant leak, bad radiator fan or stuck thermostat caused overheating and possible warped head

Many other possibilities but start here and post results>>>

i am experiencing same issue as you have.

check oil and coolant first.
